Netduma Latency Issues & Randomness

Recommended Posts

Hello:

I want to preface this with, I'm sorry for the story, but it's the only way to describe what's happening.

Back in June of 2016, I changed service providers. I went from 40m/5m VDSL provider to 150m/20m cable provider. Nothing internally has changed with the switch over, only the outward facing modem. Both scenarios were bridged to the Netduma. At the time of the conversion and random times since, whenever the network is stressed (maxed out), it begins to lag out. The only solution is to reboot the cable modem. Items tried and points to keep in mind:

  • Never an issue with the DSL line (noted a lower speed)

  • Tried two different modems

  • Arrius (Motorola) SB6183

  • Netgear CM600

  • Tried two different PCs

  • Tried a new router to replace the Netduma (Ubiquity Edge Router X)

  • Cable service was upgraded by the provider to 200m/20m, still an issue

The issue never appears when using the EdgeRouterThe only similarity is whenever I use the Netduma, I may or may not have an issue. I can ALWAYS repeat it whenever I max out the connection via a speed test. The only thing that will restore the pings and stability of the site is to reboot the cable modem which makes me point to the modem. However, the issue happens with both modem brands and the issue NEVER happens when the EdgeRouter is in place of the Netduma. This clearly points to an issue in the Netduma.

The way it acts, it's almost like there is a buffer that fills up on the Duma and can no longer process traffic at the speed it should introducing latency. I'll include graphs to see if they help, just note that when it spikes, we're not talking 10-20ms spikes...they are 400-1500ms spikes. The connection is utterly unusable.

Ideas?

That Arrius (Motorola) SB6183 is junk, sell it online and get a TP-link 7610!  Problem solved.  That modem has intermittent  ping  issues even with other routers.  May have been addressed with a firmware upgrade but who knows!

Thanks, all.

Sadly that wasn't the answer I was hoping for. Seems very few supported modems none of which I'll be switching to due to quality and ISP support. I'll have to stay with my new setup and try to con someone into buying my NetDuma...try to salvage some of the cash dropped on it.

Neither the SB6183 nor the CM600 worked for me.

I believe the SB6183 suffers from the Energy Efficient Ethernet bug that has been present from the beginning.

Not sure why the CM600 didn't work, but i too had lag issues with it. I had to restart the modem and Netduma several times a week.

Switched to the TP Link TC-7610 on Mod Box's recommendation and haven't looked back. Great modem.

Not sure what you mean by quality but I will put money on the tp link to be better faster performing modern than that netgear or the arris. The tc 7610 is only $40 online. You could sell that arris and maybe break even. Better than shelling out another $200 for a router that might be better.

Only 8 downlink channels. Need 16 for the speed/tier I'm at. Also, doesn't appear to support any 3.1 modems which blows my chance of upgrading my speeds with my ISP. Again, I appreciate all the suggestions but it doesn't seem that this is going to be a good fit for me anymore.

That is odd, 8 channels on any modem is usually good to at least 300Meg and you are only 200meg?  Should be good to go.  I see Amazon has listing indicating cable plans up to 150 meg but I am pretty sure that is a mistake.  I am going to see if I can get any more info on that since the specs at TP-link indicate other wise http://www.tp-link.com/us/products/details/cat-5513_TC-7610.html#specifications  Anyway TP-link also has the 7620 with 16 channels.  But yeah no 3.1 and I can understand wanting that to future proof.

Looking at the Q/A people are reporting 300meg speeds with the 7610https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-343Mbps-Certified-Spectrum-TC-7610-E/dp/B01CH8ZNJ0/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1496427088&sr=1-2&keywords=7610

Still curious why they list 150 meg max...  I wonder if some ISP max out speeds at 150 meg for 8-channel modems???

I'm on 200mb down 10 up and can get 250mb down and 25mb up with the 20% over-provisioning, so yes it will work for your speed tier.

I don't know of anyone using the SB8200 or CM1000, so no idea if there are any issues with those modems.

Time Warner aka Spectrum limits the speed of some 8 channel modems for absolutely no reason at all. But if you're on a different ISP then there is no reason why you can't get the theoretical max speeds of 343 Mbps down with only 8 channels. That's really all that's needed.

I have the SB8200 and no issues.

That's great to here.

If TP-Link doesn't come out with a 3.1 modem, I'll end up getting it.
