wrathoftank
I just had a new fiber connection installed to my home, so I now have cable and fiber connections. I'm looking for some expert advice on which service is better for gaming because I'm torn. My cable connection has less latency at basically every server tested using dsl reports ping test and my own testing. However my fiber connection is more stable, basically no jitter. I'm confused why my fiber connection is at a disadvantage in terms of latency, should it be the lowest latency of any internet service? Is this a routing issue? I've attached the basic ping and trace router from the Netduma Internet Diagnois. Please let me know what you think
wrathoftank
A couple of test from dsl reports ping test...
PharmDawgg
Can't explain why but I would go with less jitter over less latency any day.
FQs19
Definitely go with less Jitter and get the Fiber. Most games compensate for the difference in latency between players. (Lag Compensation) Lag Compensation is actually good. Jitter is what messes everything up.
Zennon
Low jitter every time for gaming as the guys have said, ping compensation evens it out Ping comp has a hard time sorting out a high jitter line or a locally congested line.
wrathoftank
Thanks for the advice. I just played for the first time on fiber the other day and it was pretty amazing, ping bar on netduma stayed stable the entire time, if I wasn't drinking so much I probably would have had pretty good games . So I'm definitely thinking I'll cancel my cable and stick with fiber. Does anyone know if my trace route looks normal? I just want to know if I should contact support about it because it my ping it consistently higher on almost every server which leads me to believe there could be a routing issue
fuzzy clam
I have cable (spectrum) and even know I'm late to the party IMO you made the right choice, definately always go with less jitter. Sometimes my ping is higher for no rhyme or reason and then I'll check it later and it's back to normal. And something odd to me is my ping is lower on IW than BO3 always has been, and I still haven't figured out why but it is none the less. I have nothing good to say about the old Charter/Spectrum but I see they are trying to make changes and improve their service.Even on my street they are running all new line as I talked to one of the guys today, which is really good news hopefully. I actually had a good experience with charter, they saved me from U-Verse which was just an awful gaming experience and they gave me really good pricing for 4 years. However oncer fiber was rolled into my area it is just hard to pass up. So far I've been pleased with my gaming on my new Fiber line. I've been playing Overwatch and Battlefield and it's been smooth, the real test will be whenever I decide to torture myself with Infinite Warfare. IMO COD netcode is super finicky compared to most other online experiences. I had DSL it worked really well and played smooth, then I had VDSL and it was unplayable even though ping wasn't bad and my line seemed stable, then switched to charter and everything was smooth every gun fight was a fair fight. I'm hoping it will be the same with my fiber
fuzzy clam
Glad to hear your fiber is working out well for you and I'm jealous...I want it. And my old DSL line was so smooth and stable compared to Spectrum and it was AT&T and I loved it but after my one year deal they tripled the price on me so went back to Spectrum.
