FQs19 Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 So I have Pingplotter 5 and have been running a trace to www.comcast.net for days trying to see how well my internet is working from Comcast. I have their 225mb down/12mb up package. My R1 is connected to a TPLink 7610 modem. The pc I'm running Pingplotter 5 on is wired to my Asus AC87U router, in AP mode, which is wired to the R1. The R1 congestion control is set at 75% down 80% up Here are my speedtest results for DLSReports The problem I noticed today is my ping is all over the place when iTunes is downloading App updates and I'm not sure if that is inherent with cable internet or a product of the R1 and poor setup on my part. So can someone look at these results and let me know if I can fix this or just have to live with it. I started downloading iTunes App updates at 8:21am and they finished at 8:33am. Here is a link for the Pingplotter 5 results as well. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2AQt2zYNTaMbzRhTFBSaDJmMjg Thanks
FQs19 Posted January 24, 2017 Author Posted January 24, 2017 Seems off to me... I test comcast.com Comcast.com keeps changing IP addresses so I stuck with Comcast.net.
iAmMoDBoX Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 Comcast.com keeps changing IP addresses so I stuck with Comcast.net. 69.252.80.75
FQs19 Posted January 24, 2017 Author Posted January 24, 2017 69.252.80.75 Thanks. I added that as a new trace.
iAmMoDBoX Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 Thanks. I added that as a new trace. Just for comparison.. Same setup, same ISP, same speeds, same R1 settings... Downloaded a 1 gig file at almost full speed...
FQs19 Posted January 24, 2017 Author Posted January 24, 2017 Just for comparison.. Same setup, same ISP, same speeds, same R1 settings... Downloaded a 1 gig file at almost full speed... Are these the options you have set up in Pingplotter...
iAmMoDBoX Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 Are these the options you have set up in Pingplotter... Yup, whatever default is... and also doing every 1 second... From my guess I'm getting about 5ms jitter
FQs19 Posted January 24, 2017 Author Posted January 24, 2017 Yup, whatever default is... and also doing every 1 second... From my guess I'm getting about 5ms jitter Thanks. I have my interval set at 2.5 seconds. I read anything lower than that gives false readings.
iAmMoDBoX Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 Thanks. I have my interval set at 2.5 seconds. I read anything lower than that gives false readings. Eh... I never had an issue.. This is what zoomed out to 60 minutes like your picture above looks like while downloading 5 gigs on your settings... Pretty close actually, so maybe I was wrong.
iAmMoDBoX Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 Here's 5 minutes zoomed in... Yours is on top, mine is on bottom.. The 5 gig test file was completely saturating my line at 75% CC

It looks as if comcast is throttling constant downloading more than say browsing a website.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted January 24, 2017 Administrators Posted January 24, 2017 Are you both getting this direct from the modem as well?
iAmMoDBoX Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 Are you both getting this direct from the modem as well? modem>r1>devices
FQs19 Posted January 24, 2017 Author Posted January 24, 2017 Are you both getting this direct from the modem as well? Haven't tried modem > pc but i will and report back.
FQs19 Posted January 24, 2017 Author Posted January 24, 2017 Are you both getting this direct from the modem as well? Here is the result when uploading a 1.1gb file to Google drive with Modem > R1 > PC It took 18min to upload Here are the results when uploading the same 1.1gb file to Google Drive with Modem > PC It took 15 min to upload It's obvious that Comcast is the culprit and the R1 is trying its best to mitigate. Not sure what I can do about it though.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted January 24, 2017 Administrators Posted January 24, 2017 Oh wow. Yeah the Duma is definitely working hard there. Could just be the local congestion. What is it like direct when you're not using anything?
FQs19 Posted January 24, 2017 Author Posted January 24, 2017 It's smooth but with an 8ms ping instead of 12ms when the R1 is connected. Ping goes crazy as soon as anything downloads or uploads.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted January 24, 2017 Administrators Posted January 24, 2017 Okay so definitely local congestion then. Just to make sure, everything connected to R1? 70/70, PC out of hyper traffic?
FQs19 Posted January 24, 2017 Author Posted January 24, 2017 Okay so definitely local congestion then. Just to make sure, everything connected to R1? 70/70, PC out of hyper traffic? What do you mean Local Congestion? That second plot where the ping goes up to 70ms with packet loss is when I'm directly connected to my modem from my PC. I removed the R1. How is there Local Congestion there? There's only 1 device connected to the modem. The first plot is with the R1 and the only device using the internet was my PC where I was uploading the file and watching Pingplotter. Nothing was using the internet except the PC on both tests.

That is all Fraser was pointing out for your modem only plot. When you use the duma's congestion control is is keeping the peaks much lower as expected.
