juju9678
Just got the netduma R1 and I wanted to figure out how I can check the host IP. Specifically, for FIFA 17 on my xbox one. When I connect to a game, I see a red circle on the host filtering map and I can ping that host. However, I want to know the IP address of the host and it's really important for me to know this information. Currently it just shows some host ID which is a random hash. Is it possible to see the IP?
Zennon
It is not possible using the Netduma, people could use it to target DDoS attacks etc.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted January 10, 2017 Administrators Share Posted January 10, 2017 Hey, welcome to the forum! Would just reiterate the above, there is no need for you to know the IP of the person you're playing against.
juju9678
Well, there is to me. For, eg, in a game that the manufacturers don't tell us where the dedicated servers are, I feel like it's our right to know where they are and how much they ping. To do that, I need the IP. Honestly the DDOS excuse is a lame one because, if I had any other router, I could easily find the IP address by telnet which the R1 does not support. And besides, it's the responsibility of the game manufacturer to prevent someone from getting DDOSd, not the routers. Honestly for a 200$ router, I would expect so much more customizability and freedom. It doesn't even support my gigabit speeds (I get only ~600mbps) while my cheap Asus router supports the full one gigabit going up to 900. All of this for a geofilter that I can install myself using lag drop on any DD-WRT router. Also doesn't support 5ghz and is generally cheap hardware. What I want to know now is, why should I not return this router? What does it do better than lagdrop or any other router?
XSXS
the correct location should be shown on the geo filter gui and is pingable. So you have the location and you can ping it. What is knowing the ip address going to do that you can't do already? How does the lag drop work? Can you install it on your asus and compare the results
juju9678
Knowing the IP address will allow me to ping that host on different devices without relying on the netduma. In FIFA for example, the game makers do some sort of masking which makes it look like you are connected to one host, whereas you are actually connected to a completely different host in a completely different location. I want to verify that the netduma is clever enough to identify these cases and show me the actual host I'm connected to and ping that. There's no way of me knowing unless I can examine the raw IPs where I am connected to. Using lagdrop on my asus router, I can just block all connections greater than some ping. This works perfectly for me and I get hosts only under the ping I set. I can verify that this is correct by looking at the IPs I'm connected to and manually pinging them. There doesn't seem to be any difference between the netduma and lagdrop in this case. Seems like I just have to completely blindly trust netduma and the IPs are purposely hidden so that we can't prove it wrong if at all it makes a mistake. I have some networking knowledge and I want to verify that my 200$ investment works as I expect it to, and isn't just some fancy looking software. Lack of telnet is really surprising for such an expensive machine. All this just grows my suspicion of the netduma hiding details and being purposefully vague in it's information. There's no way of verifying if the software is actually as smart as the manufacturers claim it to be.

There's no way of verifying if the software is actually as smart as the manufacturers claim it to be. I don't work for Netduma, but I will tell you that the IP is accurate. Lack of telnet or any way to access details of the device is a way to keep their software safe. If you worked hard on a one of a kind piece of software would you want it stolen? Let's face it, retail price of the router is $60 so you're paying for their software, support and future updates. As for hiding details and verifying anything... if you have some networking knowledge then it's REALLY easy to get an IP from a game. I can do it in about 30 seconds. OR you can learn how encryption works, and write your own script to decrypt the host IDs.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted January 11, 2017 Administrators Share Posted January 11, 2017 The map shows you where the server is and you can ping it (which will be more accurate than you pinging it from a device on WiFi for example). That may be the case but we also do not want to be known as the router that allows you to easily see the IPs of the players you're gaming against. If someone is dead set on doing that then they can as you've said, we don't need to make it easier for them. It is a gaming router designed for every day users. Always recommend gaming wired, if you have to game on WiFi then 2.4GHz is the better option than 5GHz. I would also see MoD's comments above. The Geo-filter is much more advanced than Lagdrop, not to mention is a lot more user friendly. I'm sure you will be happier with DumaOS given there will be more advanced features.
