I don't think you can replace Virgin's hub either, it uses that screw-in connection thing.

But it's not just Virgin's hub, it's their infrastructure (speaking from painful experience).

Obviously not everyone is affected by it but if you are then it is horrible.

My Virgin line was pretty good for years and then it became unplayable overnight.

£300 to cancel a contract? That's insane!

I don't know when Intel are doing their update but you're probably right, even if Intel drop it next week Virgin probably won't be rolling it out for 6 months.

How bad is it?

Can you post up a graph from Ping Plotter (Google it, free software) for us to look at?

You'll need to test over ethernet, straight from the super hub (in modem mode) is best.

And if you've got a TBB (thinkbroadband) graph running that's quite useful too.

If you kick up enough stink*, they will probably let you out of your contract, especially if it's not really playable on the 'gamer' package.

It depends how bad it is though.

It took me a couple of weeks and a few visits from engineers but they buckled eventually and let me out of contract without a charge.

And as I wanted to keep the cable TV with Virgin, I hassled them into giving me a much better deal on that too.

I've got nothing against them as a company (no more than any other large comms company anyway) and I would have preferred not to change ISP at all but their own engineers told me that there was nothing they could do so I was relentless until they released me from the contract.

*Just remember it's not the fault of the poor sod at the end of the phone, if you can get them on your side then you've got a lot more chance of them helping you out. And don't mention the Netduma (custom setup) or they'll try to blame it.

Softly softly catchee monkey.

Ping Plotter will show how stable your ping is.

But to really see how stable your line is you need to test straight from the modem (super hub in modem mode).

Just a simple line test while nobody is on your network.

You can use it to show how your connection is affected by buffer bloat though.

Check out the picture in this thread...

That's me testing how the Netduma controls buffer bloat caused while I'm maxing out my connection.
