DumaOS compared to OpenSource routers

Hello.

After bouncing back and forth between Netduma and an OpenWRT router

I decided to go with Netduma simply for the convenience; For example for
the GeoIP worldmap. I look at enough netstat at work to be bothered
looking at it at home all night figuring out when Bungie developers
are matchmaking me, in Europe, against astronauts on the International

Space Station and penguins in the Arctic.

Of course like with any black box system you are giving up on some
flexibility, and are limited to changing only what is implemented in the

web administration interface. In an OpenSource router you get access

to sysctl and ethtool among other tools... so if I'm playing a single game

that uses UDP and I want to experiment with offloading and receive side

scaling I could.

What does "unlock the full potential of your router" mean for the upcoming

DumaOS. Assuming that it is based on *BSD or GNU/Linux... will it provide

a lower level access to the operating system, like the ability to set your own

sysctl's?

@Unixadmin,

I've tried OpenWRT before, before the LEDE branch out, as well as pFsense, Gargoyle, DD-WRT, Tomato Advanced & AsusMerlin which all pretty much do the same thing (more or less) as far as QOS & FQ_Codel implementation is concerned and as you said I find the geo-filter far more convenient than worrying about setting up IPTables and having to resolve IP addresses. I'm also a fan of having PFiFo setup in a click or two for PSN and/or XBL ports, even going 'advanced' is as simple as choosing the port, protocol, source and/or destination.

I'm more interested in the anti-jitter and anti-spike technologies which IMO go beyond using any scheme available in those mentioned Linux based O/S but again I'm always wanting to learn more but I do not see/read/hear of anyone sorting jitter and spike issues using a simple AQM, so theoretically being able to sort these with a click or two will only add to that convenience for me.

Not to mention that the experience is already better on the R1 for me than on the other routers with said (above) O/S'.

What hardware/firmware/OS combo are you rocking currently?

Who knows? Maybe? Maybe not? We'll see :)

  • 4 weeks later...

I have the same issue, the netduma hardware is too underwhelming to be my main device...

so i have a pfSense box with the netduma behind it in DMZ...

I then have a UAC-PRO for the WiFi
