Wrong modem

Recommended Posts

Right after doing some research it appears that i have the wrong BT openreach modem, currently have a ECI modem (provided by the BT engineer when i changed to fibre over a yr ago) but my cabinet is actually Huawei. My question is this going to make a big difference to the performance of my home network? and should i consider getting the correct modem and would my line improve in anyway?

Im the opposite to you Modem-Huawei Cab-ECI and i also have a ECI modem and can not see any difference. Altough BT have stopped the G.inp on ECI cabs for the moment as there is some kind of fault it causes so you should have G.inp, mine has been disabled untill they sort it. The reason i use a Huawei modem is they are much easier to unlock.

Yes get a Hauwei modem.

The ECI Modem like the cabs do not fully support G.inp for fast path with on the fly error correction so if you do have a few errors DLM in the cabinet will force you onto interleaving with higher latency.

It's weird that they stopped G.inp on ECI cabs, mine was enabled but then it got removed .

Being the avid gamer that i am, even though i dont get to play as much these days, i have both modems currently at home. Got a good deal so i thought y not? And tbh i cant really tell much of a differance atm. My cousin works for BT and ensured me that my cabinet was a HUAWEI one. Ive got the HUAWEI modem plugged in and all set but with regards to speed and ping its pretty much the same. Maybe it might need a few days to sync better, or my cabinet may not support G.inp. For the time being i'd stay stick with the current modem you have until I get some proper testing done and had a few more games with it to see if its worth the change.

If your cab is Huawei then G.inp will be enabled as Zen said and you should see an increase in speed, is your HG612 unlocked and if so what firmware is on it as you need the newest firmware to have G.inp work with your modem. To check your cab try THIS and see what cab you have. Also you can view all your stats and see if G.inp is enabled with DSLstats again your HG612 needs to be unlocked, i am connected to an ECI cab and BT have removed G.inp for the moment and i can see this in my stats below. As i was messing around yesterday with my modem i have been hit with interleaving and speeds and latency have took a hit, this will take a few days to recover but if G.inp was enabled it would be much quicker.

Thanks for the help chaps, just to clarify do i need to get a unlocked huawei modem or unlock one myself to see any real benefits or is the standard version going to be fine.

Unlocking is very easy and some people do say they get a slight increase in speed and you can also tweak and see all your stats. If you want to unlock the modem yourself then go HERE.

Thanks for this Raddy, really appreciate the links you've provided. I double checked and yes it does confirm that i have a huawei cabinet. Well if by slight increase you mean 1/2Mb then yeah i did see a small differance. Although i must say what i found is that the connection is alot more stable. By this i mean theres no massive jumps in up/down speeds. With regards to ping i got a small improvement of about 1ms i guess. I know it doesnt sound much but it still is, but there could be a number of variable factors which could also assist these figures.

Just out of curiosity, i have an unlocked huawei modem which i bought on ebay but im currently having difficulty accessing the interface. The guy i bought it off is trying to help me resolve the issue but until then i just wanted to know what kind of things you could do with this modem to help get a better connection?? is there some thread on here which tells you the advantages of having one maybe?? Thanks for any input you or others may have.

Right still thinking about changing my ECI modem for a Huawei one (because cabinet is Huawei). Final question is it going to be any better if i dont get an unlocked one or unlock one myself, as cant really be bothered to mess about with that side of things, or will it be a waste of money? What differences could i see if any? My connection has always been fairly stable btw.
