800ms + ping spikes?

The last few nights I have been getting dedicated servers (on xbox one) with massive ping spikes. Any idea whats going on? I've ran a internet diagnosis test to check it's not my line, but the results have been sound...

Hello Toe, welcome to the forum :)

Would you be able to confirm that the ethernet cables in your console and router are plugged in all the way as this can cause really hight pings.

Could you also print a screen shot of the results in 'details' for the internet diagnostics.

Let's see what the cloud update does tomorrow. I really wish they would release it tonight, but we'll have to wait I guess...Try moving your location somewhere else, that's what I did and now I'm getting into better lobbies...

One thing I learned from the "WTF is LAG" thread, is that distance could be the issue. At 4746mi I would expect a lot of spikes and a very sh!tty connection to the host. Make sure Strict Mode is enabled and you have both the Upload&Download bars set to 70% while gaming. This is the best advice I could give you, I'm sure someone who's more tech savvy will be able to sort things out for you...

Yes, all of the games consoles in the house are wired. I am the only one currently using the internet at the minute. I had the same issue the other night, so I reset and unplugged and re connected all the wires from the netduma/ Virgin media superhub/ consoles to make sure they where all securely fitted

I have tried moving my home location around a lot playing Advanced warfare. I seem to have found settings that allow me to connect to some dedicated servers without being severely behind on the connection. But it going from one game getting 30ms ping to then the massive spikes the next

What was congestion control set to when you were playing?

its on 65% up and down, preemptive. The connection I pay for is 100 down 6 up

When you are playing, can you put peer ping on and see if when the ping to the host spikes, the bars in the peer ping also spike to ~800ms. This way you can determine if it is the hosts connection or your connection :)

Please do this change it to Reactive and also change both to 90% If you are the only one using the connection the change it to 90% only a little bit of data is need to browse the web….

But changing it to REACTIVE is key.

ok thanks for that, ill jump into another game now with peer ping enabled. Just to clarify, if it is my connection I wont see any ping spikes in peer ping? Just to the host?

The other night I had the same issue with the huge ping spikes, and the congestion control was at 95% up and down with no one else using the internet though?

If it is your connection it will show the spike to everyone so also on the peer ping. If it is just the host, then only the ping to the host will increase - the other players in peer ping will stay steady and won't spike.

I usually switch to reactive when I'm playing on the ps4 and use preemptive for the xbox. For me it feels like reactive plays better on psn and preemptive better for xbox. Ill try reactive again for a while on xbox one and see if it feels any different.

If the screen shots of the peer ping where at the same time as one of the spikes, then it looks like it was the connection of the server. Can you confirm that it was taken at the same time? :)

I was thinking can you just open up a command prompt and just "ping 8.8.8.8"  google and watch the ms for an hour or two. Also leave it up and running while your gaming. That might help with ruling out if its the server or the router. IDK just an idea.

I know its been said before but do ensure the cables are plugged in correctly, the only reason I say this is it might appear to be plugged in fully when it may not be http://wiki.netduma.com/doku.php?id=why_do_i_have_insanely_high_pingsif you look at the gif on this page, its only out slightly.

What modem do you have?

Also yes it could be the server so do see if you can avoid that one.

I ended up switching to play MW2 on the X360 and ran tests with the command prompt ping 100x, did this a few times while playing the results seemed steady...

It looks like there is an issue with the xbox live servers. I see simjc74 who uses netduma, posted a video showing how bad the connections have been when hes playing on dedicated servers the last few days -

Ok, in that case I think it is a problem with the server - not you. Could you move your home location to exclude that server?

I understand the advice to try and move around the home location, so as to avoid bad connections to dedicated servers, but It really is easier said than done with AW. I've been adjusting my home location a lot since around January time when I bought the netduma and it very rarely helped trying to find a connection that didn't feel like you are so far behind on kill cams etc.

Yep, I know its not easy but from your results it seamed to be the server that was causing the spike, so the only way to really stop that is to avoid that server :)
