Hi All,

I am on verge of changing ISP's  but have now found out that the new ISP use CGNAT . Whilst I am not expert when it comes to Networking I am aware that this means I will get a Private IP address which translates to a Public IP Address . I hear potential issues such as Strict NAT and no port forwarding , unless I purchase a static IP address for a small monthly fee .  Has anybody on this forum gained experience of CGNAT in particular the points below , I believe I can plug the R3 into the ONT directly via ethernet

  • Firstly will  Geo filter work ?
  • Is UPNP or DMZ still possible ?
  • Will QOS work and Ping heat map work
  • Will ping assist work
  • Can I prioritise gaming or Streaming etc or any devices

Apologies for so many questions I just can't find enough online , or enough that I can understand without being an expert . I can't even get my head around how a home network would look without having IP addresses attached to devices . Would appreciate any support or guidance from you guys .

Many Thanks

Hi!
It all depends on the port range your ISP will provide you.
To put it simply CG-NAT is the way ISPs limit the purchase of IPv4 addresses.
Generally, it divides the TCP/UDP port range of a public IPv4 address into 4 and uses it for 4 different clients!
If you don't want to take the risk, the best thing is to pay, even if for me it should be free on request!

I would get a static personally. Usually its like $10, which is a drop in the bucket compared to having to deal with CGNAT lol. Not only that, if you do anything from inside the home that requires the use of a constant IP address, its also useful for those things.

Everything will work, it'll just be the double/strict/moderate NAT you're be risking by moving to it if you don't get a static IP with them.
