Hello Everyone! - R3 setup help request.

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone I'm Dan.

Just bought my first ever gaming router the Netduma R3

I'm with BT Full Fibre 500mb internet with a 1m Cat 8 ethernet cable connection for my PS5.

The reason for the purchase of the R3 was I play FIFA (FC24) and MW3 but experience bad sluggish gameplay (every game for FIFA) and now and then for MW3.

All my MW3 Lobby's were ALWAYS French and German speaking and never matched with UK teams, I also noticed a lot of 1v1 fights I'd seem to lose even though I nailed them first. So I thought it may be a incorrect server connection issue.

Also with FIFA (my biggest issue) every game is awful in terms of delayed response from my players. The game just feels off, VERY VERY FRUSTRATING. I again was always connected to French and German players. I'm based in Liverpool UK.

My average gameplay before buying the R3 on FIFA was showing between 10-24ms now with the R3  it's popped up to between 30-38ms my gameplay is so heavy and unresponsive.

With my gameplay being dogsh*t still I was wondering if I could get any help from the masterminds on here.

This is my current ISP Router setup

Firewall - Default

UPnP - On

UPnP Extended security - Off

DMZ - On - Device - Netduma R3

No Port Forwards (tried many times with specific FIFA ports and nothing changed in my experience)

This is my Current R3 setup

Geo Filter - Netherlands as saying best server 19ms

Steady Ping - Active

Gaming Activity usage - It actually says 0mbps but I've played 1 hour this morning to test.

I was wondering why the R3 has made my ping worse, is there something I'm doing wrong here? I was wondering if I'm behind a double firewall or something. Or I may be missing something obvious.

I'd also love to be able to have my PS5 to open NAT type but I've never been able to successfully do it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm spending lots of money on a great gaming experience and It's horrendous right now.

Thank you!

Are ALL devices connected to the R3? How are you checking NAT, on the console network settings or in game? How do you have Congestion Control set? Disable Steady Ping, that is the likely cause of the higher ping (it does do this by design), is it lower then?

Hello Fraser

Thanks for your reply!

The only devices connected via ethernet is my PS5, I did some research on NAT Type and aprently you can't switch to Open nat with a 192.168.. IP?

I check via the console settings for NAT Type. I have now disabled steady ping thank you.

Congestion Control? I have not seen this setting on the R3?

Is it worth opening ports via the NetdumaOS? As I have done with my PS5 on my ISP router?

Currently I played some games of FC24 before, some matches connection performances where showing up in the app for the devices page then went off and never came back on.

Thanks again for reply I'm going crazy trying to fix it.

All devices should be connected to the R3 via WiFi or ethernet so it can effectively control the network, otherwise devices connected to your ISP router could cause you to lag. The NAT type has nothing to do with the IP, NAT Type 2 is open, it just means you're behind a router, it's only possible to get NAT Type 1 behind a modem but functionally there is no difference, you have done what is needed for an Open NAT.

You can find Congestion Control in Ping Optimizer > Advanced. You don't need to open ports. Let us know how you get on.

Congestion Control is on Auto at the moment.

I disabled steady ping no difference

currently getting 38 ping (from usual 12-22) in FC24 now with visual lag and heavy gameplay.

For reference as a PS5 user. None of the features work correctly and if they do they won’t for long. I’m currently down to rebooting daily just to get logged into the software. Geo-filter works sometimes. Ping heatmap is useless unless you play one of the 10 games listed. Congestion control has no impact. None of the stat data works and been waiting on HVPN for forever.

What's the average ping on the Geo-Filter and in game you're seeing now? How stable is the ping is it spiking, if so by how much?

You know what the ping wasn't too bad, but the gameplay was well off really delayed just a pain in the arse, I think EA servers have a lot to do with it. I had 5-6 great games for the first time in years and then it just went back to the same crap. I'll do some more testing today

Okay keep us posted! Sometimes you will just get bad servers that may be under load for example and there won't be anything you can do as the issue isn't on your side. Best thing is to add that server to your denied list and try another server.

Hi Fraser

Still very frustrated with this mate.

So I've reduced my geo Filter to the UK only (193 miles from Liverpool) My ping is fluctuating between 10-17 ping constantly on my last game and the gameplay was horrible very slow and delayed and a few matches before this was visual lag, or frame rate issues.

Both players where from the Netherlands. How am I being connected with these players if I've reduced my geo filter?

I'm also not getting any connection response through the app regarding my device connection and live performance whilst in a game. On the Desktop version too it shows my PS5 is inactive too. Is there something I'm missing?

How do you have your Congestion Control setup? You can only force the server you connect to, you can't impact other players and where they connect to. Just like you could force a EU server even though you're in the UK, someone from the EU can also join a UK server. It's the connection to the server that matters so you'll have the advantage.

As in you're not seeing a server on the Geo-Filter map or it showing you a ping?

Yes I understand that, it all makes having these tools pointless in a way, as what I'm trying to avoid is still happening no matter what I do. Not Netdumas fault obviously but very annoying in general, The thing is as you say regarding advantage, there is non, as my gameplay is shockingly delayed and the opponent in Netherlands is slicing through me like butter. The main server for FC24 is in Germany so I believe or Netherlands, so they will get the advantage which is why I closed in my geo filter. Anyway, currently I'm unsure what to do next, I'm averaging 40ms now from around 10-24ms every single game is painful for me. Even when it says the ping is 10-14ms it's still awful, I'm unsure if  it's my end though something I've done in my set up which is an issue. For example my ISP wifi is still active and devices at home or connected to it via wifi, unsure if I'm maybe under a double firewall or something. I'm not very technical doing my best.

Steady ping is off.

Not sure where to see ping via the Geo Filter map but the heat map shows Netherlands at 17ms

Geo filter has now been set to 377 miles including the Dutch Server for FC24 which is 17ms

PS5 Device showing Inactive. 0 Mbps

Okay so ALL devices should be connected to the R3 ideally if the QoS is to be as effective as possible so that may be part of it. How do you have Congestion Control setup? You could be getting lag compensated, in which case forcing those servers with a higher ping should help even the playing field. Does the ISP modem/router have a bridge/modem mode at all?

Hello mate

I've put the Mac on the R3 WIFI

Is it worth turning off my default firewall on my ISP Router? I'm on a BT HUB 2

Congestion Control is set to Always On via your instruction.

Ping optimiser is set to simple

Download is set at 70%

Upload is set at 70%

Speed test bypass is set to on.

Should the R3 be active in the DMZ in my ISP Router?
