NETGEAR EAX80 extender with r3

Recommended Posts

Upgraded from the xr500. Been on the new r3 for roughly 5 days now. Only major problem I have is that my extender is not.. extending. The eax80 is under my devices with great connection in the DumaOS app. When I open the net gear app it’s showing as an extender. Am I missing something? This was working perfectly with the xr500. I factory reset the extender and it automatically picked up the new r3 and network name. Please help thanks gents. Happy new years.

How are you setting this up, WPS or simply connecting to extender UI?

Set it up next to the router to insure the signal from 5Ghz is seen then see if it detects it. If it does move it to location. If it fails then it’s signal strength issue. My old EX8000 use to have to be setup this way under the instructions.

With WPS I had to repeat the setup twice to gain full throughput which was in the instructions. Off course that may not be applicable to the new extenders you have but also worth a try but important to set it up close to main router.

Yes wps. It clones the r3 network, and uses the same name and pw. I set it up right next to it after factory reset. Extender is picked up in the DumaOS app and netgear app. Only concern is in the xr500 software it showed other devices connected to it now it just displays the extended and nothing connected to it

That would be an issue with Duma firmware as it’s not picking up IP allocation from the extender for clients. That’s an issue Fraser will need to look into.
if you run a wire to it via a lan connection does it show clients then?

Check the 5GHz channel. Some extenders don’t work with DFS Channels ( above  48 and below 149). You can manually set your channel to one that is compatible and can be picked up by your extender. This was an issue with my XR 1000.

Very good suggestion!

For example, I have a TCL smart TV which only works on channels 36 to 48 on the 5Ghz band. The only way to have it on the 5Ghz band is to manually manage this channel range.

this extender supports 160Mhz so therefor uses DFS. WiFi Band : Band 1: 1.2Gbps @2.4GHz - 1024QAM; Band 2: 4.8Gbps @5GHz - 1024QAM

We were under the impression WPS was entirely not working, so just to clarify you were actually able to connect the extender to the R3 using the WPS button on the R3?

If you connect using another method, without WPS does it work better then? You may need to split the bands as well on the R3

I tried the WPS again. No luck. I’m not sure how the extender is automatically populating the wifi and pw but it is. It’s just not extending the network. It’s acting like a device on the network not an extender.

@CashewCakesDid you follow the setup instructions? Also I recommend you to follow the setup and not use wps as shown on the video

Another thing to note you said you were using the XR500 and it worked fine this is probably do to certain functions that were added by netgear so it works automatically I would guess but if the router isn't netgear as an example it is a different router you need to set it up differently as shown on the video you need to select try a new system setup I hope this clarifies your issue...

It should have an interface of its own where you can change settings, is there anything there you could change that allows it to work?

Yes the netgear nighthawk app is picking up the extender as shown.

Yes I have set this up correctly. Everything work as intended except extending the wifi.

@CashewCakesSo what your saying is that it not giving you the internet connection from the R3 correct? If so try doing the setup by lan and see if that works I know it not the best case but this might be a netgear compatibility issue and so lan would be the only option in this case.

Try looking at the web UI. The netgear app is not great. When you go into the app that has more details and should show you the connections.
