(Some) Wifi & Lan devices lose connection

Hi,

I never had an issue with the Netduma R2, but for 2 weeks, devices randomly lose internet access. Sometimes all devices stop working and once I reboot the router everything works again.

Sometimes when I watch tv (android) on Lan, it suddenly popups a message top right of the screen: Lan connection disconnected, same happens on my PC and Playstation all on lan, but it always directly works again after a router reboots.

Today my misses phone said, no internet access when she was on wifi, my phone on the same wifi works/worked. We reboot the router and her phone worked on the wifi (again) straight away.

I hope you know why this happens because rebooting every time gets old fast.

I didn't change anything, lease time has been on 12 hours for the last 2,5 years without a single issue.

Greetings Mark

Hi, I use the latest, stable firmware.

3.2.453 I currently use.

I think I can enter the interface because sometimes, some devices in the network keep working like nothing ever happened.

I will make sure I get those log files next time it happens. I only have one issue when I click on the download button to download the log files, nothing happens, it isn't downloading the files, just nothing happens.

Thanks for the support

Separate question, I didn't where to ask otherwise: what would be a step up from net Netduma R2 from the devices you offer? Something with a little bit more processing power, etc.

Thanks in advance

Keep us posted! It may be a good idea as well to sign up for Early Access: https://forum.netduma.com/topic/39415-introducing-early-access/ then once approved you can try the firmware there.

The R2 is currently the highest hardware spec we currently make/sell, if you're looking for more powerful hardware then you would have to go with the Netgear Nighthawk Pro Gaming range, something like the XR500 or XR1000.

That's alright thank you, in LAN Settings, set the DHCP range to start at .50, then assign reserved IP addresses to devices between .2 & .49 so they're out of the DHCP range, apply, reboot from the interface, wait 2 minutes and see if that stops the disconnects.

Wireless and they all accept the password, just saying no internet access with! Mark. When I reboot the router, the wireless devices connect and work again and new devices finally connect (for the first time). Reboot fixes connecting issues straight away. Never had an issue before, started like 2 weeks ago.

Weird thing is, my phone wifi stays working, only new devices or newer devices have issues, and older devices keep working on wifi, at least a few. But devices coming from outside, like my misses and friends, can't connect at all.

So sometimes I lose the connection on wifi devices that are presented longer at my house but is rare. New devices coming into the house like visitors can never connect before reboot, one reboot and it works till the next visit. And for lan devices read below:

I had Lan devices either not working at boot/ waking up, or where they suddenly said: no ethernet connection, like my tv where it says no ethernet connection found (lan). That mostly happens when I switch between apps, rarely while watching a live tv show.

Or when starting a pc game, that is online only and it says on the menu screen not connected to the internet, even though I am plugged in. One Netduma Reboot and everything work again, as well. My lan devices are older, as they were already available and connected on NetdumaR2 for months.

That's very strange, as Fraser suggested earlier I think it would be a good idea to sign up for Early Access: https://forum.netduma.com/topic/39415-introducing-early-access/ then once approved you can try the firmware there. That may be more stable for you.

I do have to say, I just updated to the lasted firmware 2 weeks ago.

Isen't there a early acces one you can give me? The last update was from June 2022 anyway right?

Yes, if you sign up to the early access we can grant you access to download the latest early access firmware. Out of interest, did you factory reset the R2 after upgrading to the latest two weeks ago?

Hi Liam, I signed up for early access.

Yes, I did perform a factory reset.

I did some troubleshooting and I looked at what I changed in the last two weeks, besides the net duma R2 firmware update. I already used Surfshark VPN software/app directly on my tv, but I start using its killswitch 2 weeks ago.

I use some specific apps that are region restricted, like HBO+ only works in the Netherlands, not UK VPN for example, as this streaming service hasn't been launched in the UK entirely. Meaning when they see an IP outside my country, it blocks access.

I sometimes quickly swap between the apps I use my VPN for, and the ones that don't work with a VPN, to begin with. Sometimes when I then open up these region-based apps they keep loading infinitely because they still see/think I am connected to a different IP than my own and therefore I am outside their available region. The tv drops the DNS etc to slow.

When they load infinitely, they don't say: You are outside our region or are you happen to use a VPN? But they just keep loading and I know I have to force close the app, so it sees the new (my original) IP and loads straight away.

But somewhere between going from a VPN ip back to my own and swapping between apps, and the latter app blocking me somewhat, I lose connection entirely (sometimes), like the kill switch activates for some reason or it makes the Netduma R2 no longer understand what happens.

And for some reason after that, the wireless and sometimes the lan devices in my house lose connection as well, but especially ones that come outside the house and try to connect after this all happens, can't connect at all. So my phone keeps working most of the time, as it was on and connected all the time, but devices that boot and/or try to connect after this, can't and get no connection message with a ! warning at the wifi symbol when they are indeed connected, only they just have no internet access.

I am not 100% sure this is the cause yet. But I deactivated the killswitch completely on my tv (lan) and laptop (wireless) and this morning when I woke up, and booted most devices, like laptops, tablets, etc all directly connected to my wifi without an issue. Same for lan devices that were off through the night.

I keep you posted on the matter, but for now, it seems, Surfshark killswitch in combination with apps that block certain IP addresses/geo-location restricted, makes my devices sometimes drop their connection entirely (Lan devices).

Or makes it so, that devices already present in the house but that we're turned off can't connect to my wifi after I start/boot them. Same for any devices that come from outside and try to connect to my wifi, like my misses or neighbor's phone, or a laptop I brought home from work. At least not until a Netduma R2 reboot, after that everything works straight away like nothing ever happened in the first place.

I hope that what I wrote makes sense, I tried to write it down, to the best of my abilities. I don't know if this is the culprit, but like I said before I will keep you posted while I keep all the kill switches off and fingers crossed that these drops and impossible to get internet access on wifi and lan for newer and or devices just turned on, never happen again.

Thanks for the fast replies, I appreciate it.

OK awesome, thanks for all the detail on that. HybridVPN has undergone a lot of fixes in our latest Early Access firmware so let me go ahead and get you added into that group and you can download and try the latest. Let us know your thoughts on it in that sub-forum!

Hi, that sounds awesome! Do I get a message about that group, or?

Atm, I don't use the hybrid VPN feature, I use the Surfshark android app on my tv and the Surfshark app on my laptop that's it. Maybe I need to look into a hybrid VPN, but my problem is that I constantly need to switch countries and from dedicated to dynamic IP addresses, so a hybrid VPN doesn't seem the best option.

Greetings,

Fakkel

No but you've been given access and can find it here: https://forum.netduma.com/forum/144-netduma-r2-early-access/

Ahh that makes sense, well the firmware there still has a lot of fixes and improvements over your current version so still worth a try to see if you have a better experience.

I found out that even though I thought I turned off ipv6 completely because surf shark doesn't work with it, it still gave me ipv6 dns on wifi. So I turned it in completely and did the new early access update and I everything works perfectly again. No issues whatsoever!
