Dirty Dog Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Hey Guys, Couple of questions regarding, DNS servers. I've often wondered what they actually do in relation to console gaming? Some seem to swear by the results of Namebench/DNSBench. Others have said it's a waste of time and only has small benefits for browsing the web, and all that's needed is the router home address as primary and to forget about the secondary. Would using results from the above provide any noticeable benefits to the quality of my gaming? Or, is it really more for web browsing, page loading times etc..? I appreciate you guys are extremely busy, so not expecting chapter and verse on the subject, but figured if anyone can give a definitive answer on the subject, then it's you guys. Thanks in advance.
Adam Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Changing dns servers wont make a huge difference, but like most things you want to optimize your connection as best as possible, If you don't put anything into the settings for dns you default to your isps and depending on the isp this isnt always the best idea. I usually have mine set to googles. The only other time changing dns is useful is if you want to to watch a streaming service from another region
BL4CK OPS V3TRN Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Hi dirty dog I researched this last year and checked out namebench . I changed my DNS to a faster one and the only slight improvement I experienced was getting into a lobby quicker . No difference to actual gameplay on COD
Dirty Dog Posted January 12, 2015 Author Posted January 12, 2015 Thanks forthe quick replies i went a bit OCD crazy with this stuff around MW3 time. The lag I suffered in that game was unreal.. @Adam. Will running Namebench and DNSBench, through the Duma, give a more accurate result than testing through my ISP router? Or no difference? Is Geofilter performance affected by optimising DNS? Thanks

Thanks no it wont make any difference what you run it through and the geo filter works off of geolocation which is based on ip address so it should affect the geo filter
jeycee Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 on my mac i was using namebanch but now i have tested in "terminal" (console) the ping stats of many DNS Servers also google dns (8.8.8.8) vs. my ISP and my ISP was 5ms faster then the fastest (google) so i am using my ISP as primary DNS. on my Xbox 1 i have set the network settings to AUTO. i can't set IP Manualy on my xbox1 don't know why (?)
Od1n Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 i also have my DNS set to googles servers (primary 8.8.8.8 and secondary 8.8.4.4) works very well, i hope this additional input is helpfull for you
Dirty Dog Posted January 12, 2015 Author Posted January 12, 2015 Using the two tools mentioned, Google DNS rarely features amongst the fastest available for me. Usually it's OpenDNS (208.67.220.220/ 208.67.222.222) or my ISP's primary or a DNS associated with their network. i also have my DNS set to googles servers (primary 8.8.8.8 and secondary 8.8.4.4) works very well, i hope this additional input is helpfull for you Od1n, you're one of the most helpful people I've seen on the interwebs. Think you do an awesome job over @XIM. Good luck with your studies dude
