Request for an example ping graph from someone / Analysis of mine

Recommended Posts

So as per title - I've been having ping issues in my games for the past year and a half.
I would like to use the NETDUMA results as another layer of evidence.

Can I get other peoples graphs as reference to mine as well as thoughts on if my graph has anything 'abnormal'

First two images are without QOS,  third one is with QOS on.
The rest are in game graphs to show ping behavior with QOS on.

I notice with QOS on I see a similar pattern under the upload ping test that I notice in my game, where it'll rise in a saw-like pattern and then drop sharply and rise again etc, not sure if that's related...

I set my speeds manually, as the R2 for some reason isn't detecting my speeds correctly. Here's my results to help aid you in finding your solution.

1st QOS off 2nd QOS ON @ 70/70 CC

You do have some inherent spiking on your line which won't be helping, it does look like QoS has helped lower that bufferbloat but there is room there to experiment with settings and see if you can get that down further.

Hmm if I go off of @TrayDay's posts, it seems my behavior is normal - but I did more researching and found other graphs on this forum that were definitely far more stable than both of ours - so I would assume TrayDay may have the same issue as me (not an issue if it's not affecting his apps).
Some of the tests were fiber which isn't a fair comparison (1gig internet) but others seemed to be similar 200mbps cable connections with almost flat ping graphs.

I did some experimenting with the time of day and the load my network is on for each test for the QOS.

With the QOS being SUPER restrictive (25% on everything) just to prove a point - I got this result:

image.thumb.png.617a3148d535d8b50e3fb968ed5bef04.png

It was definitely tighter with the new QOS but still being very spikey - didn't really notice anything in my game though.
BUT - this was at 3 in the morning.

With the same settings but at 2pm I get these results: image.thumb.png.b25916ca35bbece07abfc904a90831af.png

This is when I was livestreaming to see if that affected the load, and you can tell I'm streaming because my upload always shows at 19 (my stream takes about 4mbps upload).

Here I'm not livestreaming, as demonstrated by the full 23mbp/s upload - but still same spiking behavior - far worse than the one at 3am.

I would assume there's some kind of interference maybe with my neighbors or something which exasperates the issue during peak hours - but it doesn't make sense that even during non peak hours it's still not even stable and very spikey at 3am with QOS only using 25% of my bandwidth.
In games the issue is even bigger since the packets are bigger so instead of spiking within a range of 10-30 it goes up to 60-200ms ping spikes nonstop.

I would say that for about a week I thought I was playing Apex Legends with my ethernet plugged in. But, I was instead using WiFi, and I 100% had issues likes extreme ping spikes, moments of lagging (the everyone stops moving then immediately returns) and the non server issues of hits just not registering. Few days ago, I got fed up and was going to swap my ethenet when I noticed it was fully plugged in. This alleviated many of the issues I stated earlier, besides noticing I do still have 'some' ping spikes but not as serious as before. I watched geofilter ping on current connected server AND watched the ping in game. I would have about 10ms increased on geofilter but about 20-30ms increase in-game. But I believe this is just server issues with Apex, as the servers are not that great to begin with as compared to Fortnite and COD.  As far as lagging in other games, I haven't lagged. Although, I know exactly what you mean about others having more stable ping compared to yourself. I've noticed this for over a year when I compared my results with others and just shrugged it off as It is what it is'. I don't have fiber, as my ISP is Copper. I've tested this ISP services in THREE different homes, and they all yielded  the same results. As oppose to fiber, say AT&T, at one residence, stable flat ping. Knowing that, I just came to the conclusion, 'it is what it is'.

Ah yeah, I saw a post of yours from 2020 where you did have an almost perfectly flat ping graph.
I think the main reason for my obsession is that it's no longer just a desire for a flat ping graph but that in my games I play I'm having noticeable artifacts and negative effects which pisses me off because it used to be fine.
Granted I never did extensive ping graph testing a year and a half ago because I saw no need to - I know I didn't have any abnormalities while playing.

Valorant in particular, I used to be able to stream and play the game at the same time in Radiant no problem - but then arbitrarily the game just started getting harder.
I would have really weird artifacts of shooting people and them dying late or even I would miss my shot but it would still kill them, teleporting around into places I don't want to be when peeking, and feeling like in general I just can't react to people anymore despite having 145-155ms reaction time.
The game has weird smoothing because they don't want it to be like CSGO where when people are lagging they visibly teleport.
There's already unavoidable networking conditions like Peekers Advantage which I know how to play around - but with unpredictable ping it makes it impossible.
I don't have the advantage of stable high ping where I can swing on everyone and I don't have the advantage of low ping where I can just hold angles.

I went to a friends farm in Georgia and connected to the same Virginia servers and it was a whole different story. Literally felt like people were AFK bots and couldn't react.
But it's still absurd how he can connect to Virginia servers and have better connection than me here in New York.

At first I just blamed it on bad game servers - until they released a more in depth ping graph and I saw what other people were getting and realized I was an anomaly.
Since then I've been on a downward-spiral trying to gather a bunch of proof to show that it has to be something wrong with Spectrum because they keep insisting nothing is wrong or that it may be the games server.

Now without streaming I still get the same artifacts, and when I do stream, it's like WAY worse, and has killed my drive to play the game for the past year and a half because the game comes down to millisecond reaction time with the Time To Kill and nature of the game mode. So teleporting and feeling like everyone sees me a solid second before I see them is atrocious.

But yeah...  I truly do hope it's not just a "it is what it is" scenario and that instead it's just a Copper isn't the best moment otherwise I'd be so sad lol
Hopefully this FCC does something.

Haha. Yes, you mentioned the exact ISP, Spectrum. That flatline or perfect ping was probably the AT&T ping as that's about the time I tried it. Spectrum, honestly, is terrible when it comes to having stable ping. Possible, yes, but P.I.A lol. I believe @TODDzillaInLA can give insight on this very thing.

FCC not going to do anything lol. Although, I wish.
