Netduma R2 slow upload speed

Hi, I am a receiving half the upload the speed supplied by my internet provider. I am currently a customer with Bell Fiber 500/500mbps. I recently purchased a netduma R2 and a TP Link Gigabyte MC220L adapter. When I perform a speedtest on either speedtest.com or the built in benchmark on the netduma I receive a max upload speed of 300mbps. The download speed is perfect a bit less than when I had my Bell modem plugged in but I can deal with that. When I have my Bell modem plugged in I get 540/540mbps consistently.

I recently upgraded the firmware to version 3.0.394, I was reading online that you may have to factory reset after a firmware upgrade is that correct? I did not factory reset after the firmware upgrade could this be causing the issue?

Steps I tried:

Disabling QoS

Disabling port scan protection/ flood protection

Disabling IPv6

Changed MTU size from 1500 to 1492

Can someone help me with this issue?

Thanks in advance.Screenshot_20220228-232830_Chrome.thumb.jpg.e4253486113526956c101ef9224f7584.jpg

But I disabled QoS completely? Should I not receive full speeds?

I will try factory resetting the router tonight and re configuring, I will update once I have the results.

Thanks.

As you mention, factory resetting should resolve this. Let us know if that's not the case though!

Hi Liam,

I factory reset the Netduma but unfortunately my upload speed is still around 300mbps. The download speed is perfect but the upload speed is slow. Do you have any suggestions?

I am running version 3.0.394 do you think reverting to an older version may resolve the issue? I disabled QoS and the speed became a little better but I was hoping my upload speeds could be at least in the 400's.

How did you disable QoS? I'd suggest doing so from the three-line menu in Congestion Control if you haven't already tried this.

How did you factory reset the R2? Did you hold the pin on the back for 30 seconds or did you factory reset through the interface.

Yes, I disabled from the three-line menu in congestion control. I factory reset the device through the GUI should I do it with a pin? Do you think that would make a difference?

If it is an issue caused by DumaOS specifically that persists through boot then yes it could potentially help to upgrade using the hardware instead. Also enter the speeds you expect into Bandwidth settings. Are you testing using a wired device?

What do you mean by upgrade using the hardware? You mean factory reset using the hardware? In bandwidth settings I set 600mbps/600mbps. Yes I am testing with my computer using a wired connection, the same computer and cable used when I was receiving full speeds from the modem.

Typo, yes reset! The adapter you're now using, is this essentially allowing you to bypass the modem so it's basically wall > adapter > R2? If so, if you connect the PC direct to the adapter to you get expected speeds?

Yes exactly, I will test tonight to factory reset the netduma using a pin and reconfiguring. I will also try creating a PPPoE connection on my desktop computer but Bell requires VLAN 35 to pass internet traffic. I will research if I can set my connection to VLAN 35. I will keep you posted.

Ahh interesting, it could be PPPoE/VLAN actually so if the Bell is a gateway/router try putting that back in and connecting the R2 to it so the Bell handles PPPoE/VLAN instead and see if you get better speeds

Hi Fraser, I did some tests tonight and it seems that the netduma is the culprit. I plugged in my TP Link Gigabit ethernet media converter directly into my computer (bypassing the netduma) and set the PPPoE credentials, my speeds returned to normal 550/550. So I tried what you suggested and held the reset button in back of the router for 30 seconds, it factory reset and when I reconfigured it my speeds went back down to 540/360. I am not sure what else to do here, do you think I may have a faulty device or I need to downgrade to a older version of the firmware?

Thanks!

The problem could be that the R2 is having to handle PPPoE/VLAN. Could you please re-install your old router/modem and have that handle PPPoE, then connect the R2 to that using DHCP. Re-test your speeds through the R2 and see if they're still reduced.

Thank you Liam for your response but that is not a solution for me, the whole point of purchasing the router was to bypass my modem (completely remove it) and have the netduma handle all internet traffic. The Bell HH3000 if known for its very high radiation emission and I rather not have it plugged in. Do you think this issue is software or hardware related?

Ah that's fair enough, I think me and Liam have come to the same conclusion that it is very likely due to the R2 handling PPPoE/VLAN and so in theory it could be improved upon but it's not a guarantee. It's up to you what you want to do from here on but to continue using the R2 with your max speeds I'd recommend getting a cheap gateway that can handle PPPoE/VLAN and then it's very likely your speeds on the R2 would be restored.

Ok thanks for your honesty my last question would be do you think it's a hardware restriction or software restriction? If I purchased the Netgear nighthawk for example with the same OS will I get the same results? Also, are all the features available on the nighthawk like the netduma or are there features that have to be paid for to activate?

It could be a little bit of both, so I couldn't say 100%, given your speeds aren't too high getting an XR router may give you the speeds as the hardware is more powerful. As the R2 is our own router and our development platform it does have more features but within the next few versions we hope to give the XR the same offering as the R2 currently has.

Just installed the new XR1000 and internet speed is perfect!!!!!! Not sure if it was the hardware on that device or the software version but the Netgear resolved the issue.
