Xr 700 succesor

Recommended Posts

Hello i have been wanting a netduma router for a while but the one which got my attention is xr700, it has a port for an sfp module that i would love to connect my 1g fiber connection and ignore my isp modem, has a quadcore 1.7 cpu (i know its overkill for most home users) but i like getting the best ahha, but it has duma os 2.0 (3.0 beta) and some usefull ad wifi, and it is not selling anymore ,will there be an update of the xr700 in the near future?

NG don't tend to make it known if they're working on a new product before it's at the ready to be sold stage so I couldn't say whether they're planning that. It was overkill for sure, I suspect as it's not being sold anymore that they may not look into making a beefy hardware router like that for awhile but couldn't say for certain. We will continue to work on 3.0 for the XR700 however.

It's a router with a specific use case.

You can use 2 LAN ports for aggregation to a switch and you can use the SFP+ port for either WAN or uplink to a switch.

So for example if you have 10Gbit networking you can connect it to a switch via 10 Gbe DAC cable to SFP+

I found that when you use the NAS function on the XR500 you can actually max out the CPU's with a filetransfer to the disk connected with USB 3.0 (Samsung SSD) it will make near gigabit speed but you are running 100%.

So if you are into media streaming and you can use the possibilities like SFP+ port then it's a viable option. Otherwise for general purpose routing the XR500 or XR1000 is probably a better bet. I would get the XR700 if I could get one cheap but otherwise I will stay with XR500.

XR500 is a great all round option with 1,7GHz dual core CPU. The XR1000 is slightly less powerful on paper but does use wifi-6.

Well I actually can get a xr700 new from 280€ on sale, and xr1000 it's currently at 420.., how is xr700 now with 3.0?  Is it a viable option, I would like to use the sfp module to Wan connection so I could get my 1gig fiber connection without isp modem, I could do that right?

LOL where do they sell it for that price? Might be interested :)

Using a SFP connection to connect to WAN is supported however it's a bit hit and miss if the XR700 accepts the SFP+ tranciever.

Most GPON connections have 2,5 GBe link speeds so if you are going to try it make sure it's multi gig compatible. Also some ISP's put stuff like traffic shaping, logon details and QoS in their ONT's so really it's not always guaranteed to work.

Do you have to log in with a PPPoE account?

It's selling from Amazon UK, I had to pay more because of ports but you can actually get it cheaper from 220 I think, my isp is meo, I don't know what is that but I don't have that account or log in 😅, thanks for answering

Cheers. That is an interesting offer. In the Netherlands they are still selling for 500 euro's and that is too steep.

I am expanding to 10Gbit networking and beeing able to run a 10Gbit DAC between switch and router is nice :)

If you have no PPPoE details or anything this might be embedded in the ONT. Could still work if you get them from your ISP but it might need some tinkering :)

LOL I checked that one selling on Amazon UK. It was advertized for 220 GBP but when I put it in the checkout it was something like 180 GBP. Have to pay tax duties though. Still could not resist :)

XR700 has a much more powerful CPU.

XR1000 has a tad less powerful CPU than XR500 but it has wifi 6.

I am more interested in the LAG and 10G links on the 700 over the wifi 6 that is on the 1000.

However I think the 1000 will be a more mainstream model. So for updates etc its probably a better bet.

I wanted to know if it was able to ground an shielded cable 😅, supposedly if I had metal ports on the router and pc I would be able to ground Cat7 on both ends, but I was unaware of ftp cables and its grounding, so I think I will just return it and try to find  cat6 utp 😑

Cat 7 is not a standard that is well used anyway, that is Cat 6 and Cat 6A. There is actually no reason to run anything higher since Cat 6 will do 10Gbit up to 55 meter or so and most people can even get 10Gbit to work on 5E on shorter in house distances. Unless you live in a castle lol.

Cat 6 has a faster twist rate then 5E for the only difference. Then 6A starts adding shielding.

I have Cat 7 S/FTP as well for the wires that is fixed in my house but when you use 6A connectors it basicly functions as 6A. The shielding is there to keep interference out. Grounding is nice but it will work without grounding. I have mine grounded on one end in the patch panel anyway.

That said it's hugely overkill. That cat 7 cable is a pain to work with because it's so hugely stiff. I have a 0,5m Cat 7 patchcord between my router and modem and if you keep that in one hand it will stand straight like a cobra lol. So I just use Cat 7 for the in wall wires but the patchcords between socket and device are 5E beause that will do fine for 1Gbit. They cost nothing like 1 euro per cable. If I need better ones I bin them and buy premade new ones, like a cat 7 patch cord costs 3-4 euro haha.

Before I used a patch panel I had angled connectors on this cat 7 wires because bending them behind the router was also a PITA. Bend radius is a thing on those cables, you can't just bend them around like 5E.

Thanks for your answear, I couldn't find any cat 6 or 6a pure Cooper, only cca, Cat7 was the only one pure Cooper so I bought it 😑, and 2 male jacks which don't need tools, but I was unaware of the shield part, they say I need to ground it, but I will connect from router to pc, maybe it's better I refund it on Amazon

It will work fine without the earthing.

If you use it in 1Gbit ports it will simply function as a regular 5E/6 wire. If anything the router isn't earthed either so there is no point anyway.

I like these tool less connectors as well since Cat 6A/7/8 shielded requires special crimping tools, different from the regular 5E/6 stuff. But especially the thicker cables like 23AWG I prefer to mount them in wall plates or patch panels, or even just a keystone at the end. And then use something more flexible after that.

So does that mean they will probably forget about xr700.., we will get duma 3.0 on xr700?

Pretty great deal on the XR700 to be honest as it is a beast. There has only been one 3.0 version for the XR700 currently but we're still working on it. If you're more interested in the SFP capability compared to AX/future proofing then its a good choice, you'll get good range out of the WiFi.

They can actually run DD-WRT as well since internally it's the same as R9000 so even if software support becomes lacking, you still have a beast of a router with 10Gbe uplinking capability.

As far as I know the R9000 and XR700 are the only consumer grade routers with 10Gbe capability, anything else you're looking at building a x86-64 platform or a enterprise solution. Or something like UDM pro.

If it has only one update on xr700 for 3.0 how is the state of it?, is it stable or does it have many bugs, which firmware version should we flash

It's not too bad, it does have some bugs of course but definitely usable for everyday usage I'd say. It can be found here: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Nighthawk-Pro-Gaming-DumaOS-3-0/XR700-DumaOS-3-0-Beta-Firmware/td-p/2019958/jump-to/first-unread-message
