VPN slow speeds

Hi, I've tried about five different VPN services and have found that the R1 doesn't produce speeds over 10mb. I've attempted servers using UDP & TCP. The results are pretty much similar. When I use the VPN using my laptop and the software provided by the VPN company example ( NORD VPN) I get faster speeds. That is with R1 VPN turned off. When I have it routed through the R1 the speeds are slow.

I thought it might have been virgin media throttling the VPN. But why are the speeds OK when I use the software-based VPN

Hi sytchu4u.

I noticed a while back on the original R1 firmware this same issue.

I was told it was due to the hardware the R1 was originally made on. The R1 does not have enough CPU power to make the VPN software go faster then 10 MB. Thats why I was thinking of going with one of the newer Netduma's either by NetGear or the R2 itself.

Hello, thank you for your reply. I thought as much as I did almost everything possible to get faster speeds. What router did you end up getting? The last thing I want to do is get another router, and the speed is capped.

The R1 is a great router but it's dated.

As explained this is expected, also on the other routers I don't think you'll achieve much more speed as we need to optimize the feature more - basically I think we want to redo it to make it better in every way. As it's the VPN Hybrid you can just apply the VPN to the particular service/application you want protected so that the rest of the devices goes through your normal connection and gets full speeds.

Most router CPUs don't support AES-NI which I think is needed for OpenVPN on the hardware level. I think there is only one ASUS router with that support. Routers don't have the fastest CPUs so the amount of work it does for OpenVPN overhead will slow down the connection as the router is maxed out.
