Why can't I switch channels for 5GHz Wifi???

I switch the channel in the router settings from 36 to 40 but on my devices they still show to be connected to channel 36. I do not have this issue with 2.4. Also my laptop even when beside the router will not switch to 5GHz and stays on 2.4.

Hey, welcome to the forum!

Do you have mirror mode enabled or not? It will only switch to 5GHz based on bandwidth need, not due to distance from the router, unless you lost connection to 5GHz by being too far away.

Hi, I do have mirror mode enabled. So maybe that solves that problem. But why when I change the 5GHz channel on the router settings does it not show up on my wifi devices as being on the new channel and still on 36?

You would likely need to reconnect to it for that to change properly, some devices may not like the switch on the fly.

I changed the channel, then disconnected the laptop from the router. When I reconnected and looked it still says 36, after changing it to 40.

If you refresh the page on the interface, does it still say 40?

Yes, page says 40, while laptop says 36. When I run a wifi analyzer app on my phone the wifi channel also says 36. Also the app displays the correct 2.4 channel setting when I change it.
