Having to reboot everyday

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have recently noticed that my internet speeds (100 down, 10 up) have been dropping by almost half everyday requiring me to have to reboot my XR500 to regain my speeds (rebooting everyday). Not sure why this is happening, but was wondering if anyone else is having these issues or have had them? If so, is there anything I can do that will resolve this issue. I have the latest firmware v2.3.2.56. Any help is appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Hey, welcome to the forum!

Sorry to hear you're having this issue. Do the speeds drop on both WiFi and ethernet connected devices? When it happens have you confirmed that your speeds are as expected when connected through the ISP hub?

Thank you, glad to be here! So I run an internet speed test on a wired PC. The results show a drop of almost half so I reboot and the speed test shows norm speeds. The next day, I run a speed test again and the same results of a drop in speed. I repeat the process. Thanks for any help!

Understood, if you test the speeds from a different wired device or another device connected to the WiFi are the speeds halved as well?

When you notice the speeds have halved on the router connect directly via ethernet to your Internet Service Provider modem/router and do a speed test, what results does that give?

I don't have a modem/router from my service provider. I have fiber net and I use the XR500 only. And the met halves on any device.

But you have a modem from your provider that plugs into the XR500. Otherwise it would not work as the XR500 has no modem. So can you plug straight into that and do a speed test?

Also - the next time you think speeds are running slow, could you go the system information tab and look at the CPU graph. Are the lines really high? It’s hard to think why a reboot is solving the problem, but could be something to do with the router CPU being maxed out

@Killhippie,

Ill have you know that my provider does not provide any device, as it is fiber optic and has a direct Ethernet connection from their box. I have only the XR500.

If you don't provide anything what's this box then?  I am trying to help, so do they give you a box which converts the FTTP signal for a router (modem) Either that or its some sort of IPTV device. If you could explain what this box is that would help a lot. I'm guessing its a modem of sorts. Thanks.

I'm sorry if I sounded rude, I just took your reply to mean I was ignorant about this stuff.

And I can't give details about what their box is. Their line comes from the ground into a box mounted to my house outside, then from there, another line that connects to a power box, not sure what it is but it has to be plugged in, that box had a Ethernet port on it which plugs directly into my router. I've never seen this before as I am used to having to have a modem like you mentioned. But it is like some sort of power supply. Sorry, but that's the best I can explain.

When you moved here did you do a factory reset and set up from scratch so it could pick up the correct details from the new ISP? If not I would suggest doing that, might be there is an old option that needs to be changed for the new setup, reset and going through the wizard should do this.

No worries on being rude I never thought you were beingrude or ignorant,  just trying to get a view of your layout. :)  I would think you would connect the Ethernet port from that device which sounds like an ONT to the WAN port of the XR500 as you have done, then as Fraser said re run the set up wizard turn off bufferbloat and QoS maybe and do a speedtest then.
