xX_Super_Gremlin_Xx
Can anyone help me understand what all a gaming switch does? Also I do game with my PS4 hard wired to my XR500 and I’ve been contemplating on purchasing a Nighthawk S8000 gaming switch, so if anyone can help educate me on what a gaming switch does and also if one would benefit my gaming experience since I already have the XR500. UK_Wildcats_Fans
A switch simply allows you to connect more wired devices (similar concept as USB hub) . For example, I have about 10 devices wired on my network. I added a switch so that I add more slots to wire all the devices. If possible, it is always better to keep your gaming console or computer wired directly to the router. https://youtu.be/NDVImep5UBI
xX_Super_Gremlin_Xx
Hey , thanks for that bit of info.. So if I only keep my PC and PS4 directly wired to my XR-500, then a gaming switch is not going to benefit me at all? I still have 2 unused Ethernet ports if I decide to add another device. BIG__DOG
@UK_Wildcats_Fans is almost correct, but the S8000 is a "managed switch" Which means you can do more, such as QOS, LAN port prioritization, link aggregation, etc etc. It also allows you to prioritise gaming packets as it has a "gaming Lan Port" If you are going to use your XR500 to do all the QOS etc etc then I would buy an Unmanaged switch which you can just connect devices to and leave it. Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted February 25, 2020 Administrators Share Posted February 25, 2020 As above, unless you have a lot of devices you need to connect via ethernet and therefore prioritize the console over those other devices connected to the switch then I'd stick with the XR500 or an unmanaged switch. The Xr500 will provide the QoS and prioritization.
