opening NAT for PC

Recommended Posts

I'm running a Win 8.1 PC hardwired into NetDuma (firmware 1.03.4) with my cable modem in bridge mode. I was getting Moderate NAT in CoD AW when I used a normal DHCP lease, even with the GeoFilter off and UPNP enabled.

I looked at my DHCP leases and set the R1 to issue my PC the same static IP that it had issued through DHCP (I left the PC to obtain its IP through DHCP). Then when I looked at the UPNP screen on the R1, it listed my PC and ports forwarded through UPNP. When I opened CoD, it showed Open NAT.

At that point, I was still running 1.03.3 firmware, so I upgraded to 1.03.4. The R1 issued a new IP to my PC through DHCP. Even after I reserved a static IP in the R1 and manually set my IPv4 settings to that IP, I still show a different IP assigned to the PC through the Device Manager on the R1. Do I also need to set a static IP through IPv6 on the PC? How do I keep the PC on a static IP?

NAT is still Moderate, with or without GeoFilter.

Hey quick! So you have assigned it again after upgrading the firmware? You can set a static IP on your PC by following this guide http://wiki.netduma.com/doku.php?id=how_do_i_set_an_automatic_static_ipI would untick IPv6 though and just do it for IPv4. Then if you reboot from settings > miscellaneous on the router does your IP change?

I would say keeping everything automatic really is your best bet though, is UPnP forwarding in settings > misc enabled?

Yes, I assigned a new static IP after upgrading firmware (using the same method as the link). The difference is I didn't leave the PC on DHCP and just match the number as a static IP on the R1. I will try to untick IPv6 and reset the router and let you know what happens.

Does it matter that I set my DNS to the OpenDNS servers? Should I set the PC DNS to the R1 and just use OpenDNS at the router?

Ok, so I've tested it several ways. I can get an Open NAT, but only if I use DHCP to first assign an IP to the PC, then use the DHCP assign on the R1 to set the static IP as the same IP that was assigned through DHCP. It's a temporary fix because if the R1 is rebooted, it may assign a new DHCP to the PC, and then I'd have to reset the static IP.

All the other things I tried above always produce Moderate NAT.

I thought it might be a complicating factor that I'm running Windows on a dual boot iMac (Bootcamp), so maybe the R1 is getting confused that the same MAC address has a different IP at different times. But I set the same static IP on the Mac side, and that didn't change the equation any after rebooting the R1. Curious to get your thoughts as to what's going on.
