VPN setup "Failed to communicate with router"

hey there,

I used to use ExpressVPN a while back but canceled my subscription. Now I renewed it again and I am having trouble getting it to work again on the neduma like it used to work before.

I have entered the username and password as I used to do before, and the config code of the location. now keep getting the "Failed to communicate with router" error. I looked in previous forum topics and non of them worked.

-I tried to connect to different servers and made sure they are not down.

- restarted my router after disabling the VPN

- Restored it to default and reconfigured everything again

- I do not have any firewall or antivirus active

note: when I activate the VPN on the VPN's application on my mac, it works fine. it just doesnt work on the router. keeps loading for a very long time then gives me that error.

update: VPN support suggested using another protocol than OpenVPN. is that possible on the netduma router ? but Since the VPN is working fine from the MacOS application on OpenDNS then that shouldnt be the problem. it's just not working on the router

I’m afraid I know very little about using VPN so I won’t be much help here but have you tried disabling VPN, rebooting R1 from miscellaneous and then setting the VPN back up?

The Netduma staff will definitely be able to get you sorted.

yeah of course, during the process of troubleshooting I also reset the router to factory about 5 times with no luck.

Spent hours with the VPN customer service and they still have no idea why the application and the router act differently while it's the same server and same protocol.

we tried changing the DNS, that didnt work too. Router is on latest firmware too.

Neduma staff are always helpfull, I know and have to give them credit for that so hopefully I would get a helpfull reply from one of then that knows about VPN.

He's correct in saying you cannot use PPPoE and a VPN at the same time. This is the case for most routers, since both require full use of the WAN connection to function. You should be able to overcome this by allowing the Netduma to handle PPPoE and using a second router for the VPN. I believe that should work - I'm not that savvy with VPN's but it can't hurt to try it out! And I'm fairly sure it's the same for the XR500 and all other routers though I'd have to investigate it further.

Nope , That didnt work too. The loading takes about 15 whole minuits then it gives me "failed to comunicate with router" then the error stays one no matter what i click in the VPN section until i reset the router with a pin in the back of it cause niether the would it restart or reset from the interface.

yesterday it did connect to the VPN, was serprised, wanted to test another server cause i had some packet loss then it refused to connect to any other server or the one that i was connected too

I'm not sure what else to suggest, it's possible it's due to the client on the router being outdated. In which case DumaOS will be out soon, I'm not sure if VPN Hybrid will be available immediately but we'll be able to update that much easier.
