Still getting Lag

Recommended Posts

This is my 2nd day using the XR500. So far I’ve been pretty impressed. The first day was great as I began to figure out things and I was connecting to hosts in my area with a 22-25 ping. But the second day (today) I’ve been getting connected to some pretty laggy hosts even in my radius. 120-167 Ping??? I even reduced the radius to under 300 miles and it threw me in games that were horrible. Is there anything I can do to assure I get games like the first day?

Hey, welcome to the forum!

This sounds like a local congestion issue. Firstly make sure ALL devices are connected to the XR500. Nothing should be connected via WiFi or ethernet to the ISP modem/router, should even go as far as to turn of the ISP router's WiFi.

Then on QoS set Anti-Bufferbloat to 'Always' with 70% selected for both the download & upload sliders. Depending on your connection speed you may want to allocate your console some bandwidth, games don't require much (less than 1mbps) so as long as it has that it's good to go. Also under Traffic Prioritization ensure DumaOS Classified Games is enabled.

If possible you should always use ethernet when gaming otherwise you could have lag issues as WiFi is less reliable than ethernet.

Thanks for the quick reply. All of these things you mentioned were done day one: My modem has been bridged and everything is connected to the Nighthawk router. I use a wired connection always. Bufferbloat is set to 70, (as I checked a post from earlier and saw you mentioned that) my bandwidth is set to about 50 percent allocated to my PS4. My download speed is about 250 and upload is about 24 according to the speed test. Not sure what else to do.

In that case either the server is mis located on the map i.e. it should be further away, if you provide it's ID - found in the ping panel I can take a look or it's just a bad server. In which case you could move your radius or even your home to block it completely and force another server. It really gives you the control to find what works best for you.

Thanks for the ID, double checked it and it's in the right location so it was just the server itself misbehaving. Yes essentially, for example when testing I force servers in different countries. If you know for example there is an LA server for your game you could force it by placing your location there and putting your radius small enough where no other servers could be included.

Also what does it mean when one of the peer icons appear and one is bigger than the rest? Is the bigger one me? Also how do you get rid of a server I didn’t mean to whitelist.

The server id ...483af3 shows on my R1 it is somewhere in Europe 13000km away. I am in Canada. Is the R1 right or is it in Indiana.

The biggest icon is the host of the game. You can delete it from the allow & deny section under the Geo-Filter Map by clicking the trash icon. Indiana is correct, definitely not in Europe because I ping to it at over 100ms and I'm in the UK.

Thanks for that info. So if the biggest icon is the host, how do I know which icon is me, and also how do I know which one is a friend in my party? I’ve been clicking on the different peers, and can’t find them to whitelist them.

There isn't an icon for you as there doesn't need to be. Would recommend inviting your friend to the party before you go into the game, that way when an icon appears on the map you know it's them.

Good evening. Sorry but the xr500 is not being consistent and it’s beginning to get frustrating. I’ve tried various severs by moving my location etc., and it even puts me into laggy rooms and lobbies. I’ve rarely experienced a yellow or red ping while playing in games but since I’ve used the router, I’ve found myself experiencing this issue much more frequently. I’d really like to find a solution to where the router is being consistent and working as advertised.

why would my xr500 nat type be unavailble.

im still able to connect to games, but it just odd that

it would pop up as that nat type. ive unplugged both

router and modem and it still hasnt changed

also i live in mn, so are you telling me i can set my home location to

californian and i might get better ping service?

Could you make your own topic if you have a question/issue please as it's easier to manage support but to answer your questions:

Disable the Geo-Filter before booting up the console, maybe that the Geo-Filter is causing a false reading. Yes you can force servers wherever by setting your location somewhere else. If it's further away from where you actually live though the ping may be higher.

Just want to give you an update, I stayed playing on that same server and right after you left, the ping jumped up to 122 during gameplay. I even took screen shot pics on my phone to show it’s in the same location and same server.

The IDs are likely slightly different - there are many servers located in a cluster in the same location. So very likely some servers there that are incorrectly located, if you give me the IDs I can move them in a cloud.

Thanks for the update Kahari - Fraser will be back online in about 4 hours so I will let him follow this up as he has already looked at your connection.
