IP fragmentation?

Recommended Posts

I'm running my router though the bitdefender box 2, so that may be part of the problem.  not only does turning total security off do nothing to fix the OS dashboard, but now I can't even see the dashboard ("Unable to get property 'addWidget' of undefined or null reference"), but now starting today my playstation 4 is giving me "your router may not support IP packet fragmentation" and this seems to be causing problems.  My connection is green, mostly, but spikes to red with huge lag issues in CoD ww2.  Plus despite the port 3074 being forwarded for the PS4 only, it still apparently causes problems with the connection to give me a moderate NAT.  For other games it still seems to be open.  Until today, I haven't had this issue.  I also just downloaded the newest firmware and rebooted everything, even hard reset my ps4.  This issue was happening before the firmware update.

Any ideas why things have suddently changed and what the heck is IP packet fragmentation?  I haven't had this issue before today.

Hi Badger - the first step is to find out if the bitdefender box is causing this, which seems the most likely reason.

What happens if you disconnect the box completely from your network, so you connect your PS4 directly to the XR500 which then directly connects to your modem?

the problem of moderate NAT could be for its main router, if the xr500 proves that port 3074 is open it should not be a problem unless your main router has not configured the DMZ or port forwarding.

Regarding the fragmentation of packages as far as I know, it is usually due to problems with the MTU.

To know the size of your MTU go to your PC and run CMD then type this command: netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces

next you will be shown the list of network positives connected to the PC and their corresponding MTU on the left, if the size of the MTU is 1500, you must subtract 28 bits used in the headers (IP [20 bytes] and ICMP [8 bytes]) so it would have a value of 1472.

Having that value already go back to the console of the command prompt and type the command: ping google.com -f -l 1500

Putting the value 1500 will surely indicate that you have fragmentation of packages rewrite the same command but changing the value to 1472 then you the results you have to receive is that it sends correctly and there is no fragmentation. In case its value is not 1500 and it is different, remember to always subtract the 28 bits from the headers and then test with the ping to google command.

greetings and I hope that your problem is solved

Just to add this is almost certainly the Bitdefender box. Very early on in DumaOS's life we had IP Packet Fragmentation on the PS4 speed test. We actually isolated what was causing it and fixed it, I've never seen that message again since then so that makes me lean towards Bitdefender. They should have a fix out very soon as it is working, I will chase them again to get an ETA.

Sorry to take so long to get back - more work hours and Olympics kept me off the computer and ps4 altogether.  I did try the ping thing, and a 1500 gave me 100% loss, 1472 had no loss.  Is there a way to change this?  Apparently one of the bitdefender updates fixed the OS issue so I can see my whole dashboard again.  When my roommate I done with homework I'll try pulling the box out and resetting the router to the modem and see what that does.

You can change MTU in Settings > WAN Setup I believe. Great to hear they put out the update and that fixed it!

I disconnected the Box2 and reran my internet connection test on the PS4 and the IP fragmentation warning is gone.

But the ping google test from above still shows 100% packet loss when I send it with 1500.  Do I need to change the MTU to 1472?

Yes as you mentioned 1500 gives you packet loss (which is what the router's default MTU is) change it to 1472 as you know that won't give you packet loss, then you're all set!
