TheMajorTool
Hello Netduma people! I'm a new user -- about two weeks so far -- and I've been having a few issues that I'm trying to sort through. I have Spectrum Cable -- 60 download and 5 upload -- and we live in a 3 year old house. When I first setup my Netduma, it has my location in another state, but I did change it to my current location. Is that a normal thing? I also setup the GeoFilter at 25ms ping, but I'm still getting into games (Black Ops 3) with consistently 35 ping and sometimes more than that -- at least according to the in-game ping tracker. Any idea on what's going on here? Is there somewhere else that I should be looking to check my ping? Also, I've noticed that when I play Titanfall 2, there's some significant lag as well, almost as if I have done something wrong with the setup. Console: Xbox One I'd appreciate any help that you can offer. If there's any additional information that you need to help me out, let know. Also, sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, new to the forum and etiquette. TheMajorTool

Just move your home location to where you want it. Actually a lot of R1 users move their locations around if they're trying to get on servers in a different part of the country from where they normally go. There's usually a difference between the ping the R1 reports and the ping you see in game...for me, (I play a lot of Titanfall 2)...usually R1 ping is about 50% of the ping being shown by the game servers For Titanfall 2 turn off your Geofilter. Use the Congestion Control only. Titanfall 2 uses only dedicated servers, the Geofilter is not very helpful with Titanfall. I have Verizon Fios 50/50 Plan and I hardly have any lag playing titanfall 2. When I do have it, its usually reduced to encounters with certain players on the other team not the entire game. I set my congestion Control to 70/70 up/dwn and use the Preemptive algorithm. With the speeds you listed you should probably use Preemptive as well. Spectrum Cable is subject to congestion on the ISP side of the connection, and there's unfortunately not a lot the R1 can do for you when your lag is coming from your ISP. The R1 is fantastic at managing any lag which is caused by people using your internet while they're at your house, but all bets go out the door once your gaming packets are out of your home network. You can do a little testing by using an app called ping plotter. It watches your internet traffic and gives you visual evidence as to where your packet loss is coming from. what do you set your CC sliders to? How many people are using the internet while you're gaming? Are you using Preemptive or Reactive Algorithm?

Great, for Titanfall, I can turn off the geo-filter -- do I need to restart my router and modem after I do that? What do you recommend for the congestion control? To be honest, I don't really know a lot about what it does outside of the video I watched. Same goes for Reactive vs. Preemptive -- can you explain a little more that they and how to best use them? And, is there a way when playing in game, to see my ping to the host with the Netduma portal?

And, is there a way when playing in game, to see my ping to the host with the Netduma portal? No need to restart after you turn off the Geofilter Congestion Control should start out at 70% for each slider. If you start lagging a lot because there are lots of people in your house using your bandwidth...move the sliders some more towards 60%, but I doubt you'll need to do that. Reactive and Preemptive are algorithms that tell the router how to handle your network's information Prepemtive gives you a more steady connection, but sacrifices some of your available bandwidth. Reactive is made for people who have over 60mb/s connections so they can utilize their greater bandwidths. You should try yours out on both. Do a little experimentation to see what works best with Spectrum. no matter what though, you need to have everything connected to the NetDuma or you're just wasting your time. If you only have your gaming traffic going through the netduma you won't be able to take advantage of everything your router can do for you. I don't think there is a way to see what your in game ping is while gaming through the R1.
TheMajorTool
Alright, I'll give those a shot tonight. Any thoughts on the Black Ops 3 issue? I have it set for 20ms, but I've been in games with yellow bars and their (CoD's) ping graph says I'm still in the 30s.
major masingil
I can't help you much with BO3. There should be tons of threads about best settings etc etc. You'll have to search the forums a bit or hope someone else chimes in. I mainly use the R1 Congestion Control sliders for the games I play. Chances are you're getting on to dedicated servers if you're seeing players out of your Geofilter settings. Also 20ms host is great, but the thing you need to remember is the Geofilter can't kick other players offline who are connected to the same host as you are. So you may have a 20ms ping to the host, but if a person from China gets onto that same server, there is nothing you can do about it. You could leave the match, reduce your home location, or maybe change your home location so you get hooked up to different servers/hosts. I'm going to drop a big piece of knowledge on you right now regarding the R1. You can fiddle with the settings a million times to try and get the perfect game, but there is so much that you are not able to control when it comes to your gaming packets once they leave your house; you're better off setting the CC sliders to 70 and if you use the Geofilter set your PA to 35- 40 ms or so and your home range to about 800 miles or 1300 km and just play to have fun and forget the Netduma is doing anything for you. The range you set on your GF is kind of dependent on where you live...if you live in China you'll need a really large range, if you live in NYC or LA...you can probably make your home range 300 miles or less... Team up with me on XB if you're playing TF2. major masingil
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted June 27, 2017 Administrators Share Posted June 27, 2017 Hey, welcome to the forum! Sounds like you've got some great advice so far. Just to add regarding setting ping at 25ms. Ping assist only works outside your radius. Basically it's so that you never miss the opportunity for a good game if you were going to block it normally with your radius. You can still get higher ping games than your ping assist limit within your radius. If you want to just search for games under a certain ping then place your home in the ocean, smallest radius, strict on and ping assist set to the desired number. Just a couple of follow-up questions: I do have a good in-game experience with Black Ops 3 -- just normal CoD lag. Would setting my location in the middle of ocean and following those instructions improve the experience or probably not? Also, are there any ports that I should open for Xbox Live to help? Lastly, I have been experiencing a few more games with some yellow bars (opponents) since switching to the Netduma, any thoughts or is that normal? Appreciate the help! Depends if it gets you a lower ping compared to your normal settings. If you have an open NAT then you don't need to forward any ports. UPnP should be able to get it for you. If you want to port forward then this should help: https://blog.activision.com/t5/Activision-Support/What-ports-are-used-by-Call-Of-Duty-Black-Ops-3-on-PS4-Xbox-One/td-p/9748166 We can't influence other peoples connections so I can't give any definite answers. Perhaps because normal matchmaking places you on servers far away you're encountering players who've connected to your closest one. That means you'll have the advantage over them

I think you have to try both ways as every user is different I just UpNp with no issues but I have multi console household so PF is not an option for me I just started playing Bops 3, usually I play TF2. I have yet to get a good/great connection with that game (bops3) but I have made some hardware changes to address that, i.e new modem. Anyway concerning TF2, I agree with everything major masing said. However when I do experience lag with TF I will back out to the main menu and try a different server. I usually play on the Dallas or Salt Lake city server. That game is pretty spot on for hit detection and if it isn't there is usually something wrong on my end, I.E congestion on my line. Anyway good luck!
