A problem with internet usage

my local internet provider claimed I used 282 (GB) last month over the last year my usage has jumped from 90 to 282 GB. I called them and they said I use Netflix to much I told them I do not have Netflix or do gaming or download music. For the past few days I have been watching my usage through my wifi and been checking there Internet usage limit on my account they show a lot more than I have been using I only have two iPads we use and when not in use the wifi is turned off. According to there records shown in my account last May I used 90GB. This year I used 282 GB. What gives I'm retired and live in the country no neighbors it's only $20. For an additional 100 GB. but I don't understand where it all went. Thanks

So do you have a netduma and don't game? Seems a strange choice of router for only two iPads (I'm sure the netduma guys aren't complaining!).

If you have a netduma you can monitor your internet traffic and see what devices are connected and using bandwidth. If you don't have a netduma you may be better seeking specialist help relating to your modem / router provider (perhaps your ISP forums?). Alternatively there are bandwidth monitoring programs you could investigate which may show what's going on / provide logs to show to ISP etc.

These would only matter if you are in WIFI distance or somebody was parked outside.......

Do you have WIFI enabled , is there encyption set on there either WEP or WPA / 2 ? , wep being easy hackable.

If you have a password is it guessable? ie from a dictionory attack (places house names dates of birth etc)

You have told them you do not game, do you have a Netduma?

I would first check attached devices, if there are some you don't recognise just kick them off by turning of WIFI then changing your Password and hide SSID then turn it back on. Then just keep a check on attached devices and if unwanted ones return you know its someone you have told the new password to.

Thanks for the reply I know nothing abouat wifi usage until there was a problem I never gave it a thought I trusted my provider and paid my bill now maybe they have another way to charge you and you have no way to dispute your usage. My wifi is a Netgear N600 when my last one broke I went to WallMart and bought a replacement one I had no idea what to buy a employee said he used this one and easy to connect that was ok with me that was two years ago. It is difficult to find anyone with any knolage of how the innernet provider charges for there service I'm dumbfounded on where to turn I have ask people that watch Netflix and do a lot of gaming on there innernet and they never herd of limits I ask them to call and ask if they have limits just for comparison but they are reluctant because they think they might draw attention to there usage. I live in the country and my closest neighbor is over a thousand feet away my house is 250 feet off the road if someone needed wifi they could go to McDonald's or the local library for a free hook up and no one would care. Tomorrow I will call my provider and try to find out where the problem is if I don't get any satisfaction I will call the Better Business Bureau to try to find a solution I have no where else to turn. Thanks for your time Roger

Hi,

I would suggest checking the Network Monitor on the router to see what device is using it. Remember the colours correlate to the device colours at the top. I guess the first step is to identify which device is using it. Once you've done that you can pause the graph and click the spikes on the graph. It will give you a break down of whats the device is actually doing.

If you don't mind me asking why did you get an R1 if you don't game? At the moment that is our USP so its very intriguing to me :)

Hi Roger

Thanks for the clarification about the situation. It's not nice to get an unexpected bill and can cause worry (regardless of the amount).

Next steps I'd recommend is the make sure your wifi is secure. For example, when you connected the iPad to the wireless did you need to put in a password? If not I'd recommend setting on straight away. If you already have a password, change it to a completely different one.

You'd be surprised how far away a wireless signal can be picked up sometimes but the further it travels th weaker it gets so unlikely someone could be using a lot of bandwidth given your location description. Do you also have a PC connected to the network and regularly on? Perhaps a virus could be eating up data?

Once your network is secure, I'd call your ISP and discuss your concerns. They will have the discretion to waive the fee if you make your case constructively. Highlight how you use the Internet, devices connected and past useage should show a more consistent pattern which shows the last bills useage to be an anomoly (it's not unknown for an ISP to make a mistake).

Lastly for reference, I use about 200gb a month on average. But I have games consoles, multiple PCs, TV, PVRs, servers, iPads, iPhones etc all connected. My ISP has no limits so I can use as much as I like. I think a personal high for me was 500gb when I downloaded new games and high TV useage (HD TV box sets etc)

Good luck Roger and I hope you get sorted.

Iain, I don't think Roger has a Netduma. Rather he has struggled for sensible help and somehow found 'us'.

Could be wrong though :)

I think you're right, that's how I'm reading it.

I just want to understand why I went from 50GB to almost 300GB a month when nothing changed other than I dropped my cable TV from them because they kept raising the rates and offered no extras. Last night I turned my wifi off until 6:00am iwe turned our wifi off on iPhones and iPads with reduced usage today as of 6:30pm our usage is 0.568GB is it possible our iPads are the problem I have a couple laptops and a couple desk tops but are turned off and unplugged so they are not a problem. I was searching the web and was reading some post and found this site people was asking questions and you guys had some good answers. I will let you know how much GB I use tonight. Has this site thought of a APP for iPhones there is a ton of good reading on here. Thanks

There is a chance you have an app installed that is consuming data. I dont know about ipads, but android has ability to check data usage per app. I would assume ipads do as well. Look for offending app.

I hope this helps someone with the same problem my usage yesterday was 1.789 GB that was with limited usage and when using youtube all settings were turned down also turned the wifi off for seven hours from 11:00 pm to 6:00am the modem used .250 GB with wifi turned off. Today I will use innernet as normal but watch any streaming video with low settings. I found a web site that has a data calculator you put in what you think you use in a month and it tells you the GB you use I put in a lot of info and it is hard to go over 200 GB a month .

Today in the Cleaveland Ohio area Cox cable said they were going to start limit the data a customer can use they said that a house hold only needs 150 GB a month if they charge you for ustng to much data will they give you credit for what you don't use. They make it sound good but they will always come out on top. armsteong cable has it spelled out in there contract go over and you will pay.

We will be adding a bandwidth tracking feature soon so you can see how much you've used and stop using it when it reaches a certain threshold.

Who is watching your innernet provider if they are watching you I don't trust them I turned off everything last night including my wifi just before logging off the next morning I went to my account and checked my daily usage (I done a screan capture) 1.9GB for the day not bad while the wifi was off it used 0.000987 GB between 11:30pm and 6:30am I first went to my account and checked usage it Ithen said I used 2.25GB yesterday what is with that not what it was last night that is not much but in a month it could be enouf to run you over your monthly limit and you could be charged for additional GB. A gas station charges you by the gallon and you know exactly what you use and what to pay is the innernet going to be like this Netflix YouTube and other movie providers and online gaming will be in trouble if you are limited to 150 to 200GB a month and are charged for going over a thread on here a guy went over and was charged $2. A GB he used I think he was 60GB he wasn't happy. Thanks

Actually games don't use much bandwidth, but I'm with you Roger. In the UK we have a watchdog that that looks after consumers called ofcom. Does the US have something similar?

I do not know but I'm going to check if they are charging you for data usage someone should be watching them my son does a lot of on line gaming and uses Netflix like it was cable TV and has never had a problem. Just checked my daily usage and it is 0.896GB at 1:30pm some days it would have been at five or six GB by now. Thanks
