New Netduma User having trouble getting optimal settings

Recommended Posts

HI Guys!

Just purchased  the netduma 2 days ago. Didnt need to update the firmware since it was already 1.03.6h. I followed the optimal settings guide for 120mb and less. Im currently using time warner as my isp with 100 down and 10 upload. I have my arris surfboard sb6141 connected directly to my netduma router nothing else. Ive been noticing im losing alot of gunfights now more then usual Ill shoot them first and i still die. Also dieing really fast. Its also taking me forever to connect to  servers(codiw). At first Ive assumed it was my internet but when Ive plugged in my old router I was doing better. Im pretty sure that I havent set the netduma correctly. I dont know much about router settings and etc so please do explain abit in detail . also I forgot to mention I wasnt able to get open nat. I didnt understand what that DMZ was about so I actually maunually put in the port settings for codiw. I also ran the ping diagnostics settings from the router and everything came back good and exceptional.   I would really appericate if someone  could help me get this running smooth for codiw. Im using ps4

Your speed test results in the first post show that you live in NY, is that right?  If so, you need to adjust your home location in NetDuma to somewhere in NY and geo-filter from that.  Connecting to a west coast server from NY will likely give you 100+ ms ping responses.

After you move your home location which will help,

1 - Did you put your speeds into the duma (what you actually get not what you pay for) ?

2 - Are your sliders (congestion control) set to 70 /70 both ways as it's a good starting point and as you learn more about the duma you can tweak from there if need be.

3 - And I would suggest reading the WIKI regarding your set up to make sure it's correct and if you still have questions post back and we'll get you sorted out.

Also not sure if the SB 6141 is one of the modems that has an issue with the EEE bug or not but I'm sure someone will post the answer and I'll check into it and see if I can find out.

Update...I'm pretty sure that that modem has the Intel's Puma 6 chipset in it and several people have had issues with it causing huge ping spikes.

I would check out this entire thread as a lot of really smart people posted in it

Intel's Puma 6 chipset suffers from latency & jitter, fix soon.

Be ware that the Arris SB6190 is experiencing some FW issues seen here:

https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r31079834-ALL-SB6190-is-a-terrible-modem-Intel-Puma-6-MaxLinear-mistake

and https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r31122204-SB6190-Puma6-TCP-UDP-Network-Latency-Issue-Discussion

There are two problems, ICMP and TCP/UDP.

The SB 6180/83 do not suffer from this issue. This is an Intel Chip set issue. The new up and coming SB 8200 is supposed to be Broadcom based.

Moving the home location to where you actually live will definitely help. 70/70 anti-flood & hyper traffic also to remove any local congestion

Thanks  fraser I already have them set. 70/70 (reactive) and hyper traffic. Those were the first things I changed when I got the router.

Thanks man!

I tried looking up for the sb 6180 model cant find it on amazon must be ancient xD. I do see the 6183. so my best option would be the arris sb 6183?

Ya the 6180 is kind of old, I got my back in 2011/2 I think.

Go with the 6183. You'll be good unless you wanna get the SB8200. I think there still out on that one though.

Yea given that I'm using time warner cable (spectrum) . no way in chance I'm getting anywhere near gigabit speeds or over 200mb. Better go 6183

would this router be a viable solution  TP-Link TC7610 ? Just wanted to make sure I dont end up getting more jitter & latency

I don't know for sure. I want to say that I thought I remember seeing someone on the dslreports forum meantioning that they had this and it worked for them. I know that the one forum user tested the 6183 with his 6190 and he definately didn't see issues with the 6183. He was clear about his testing and results about it. The 6183 would be good for our 100/10 service. Is your SB6141 experiencing the same issues at the 6190? I never bought this model. Last modem I had online was a 6121. Still good modem however fell off my ISP support list.

Also, the TP-Link you refer to is a modem, not a router. ;)

Another suggestion: I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem from there side. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

haha sorry meant *modem . Its strange  im getting full speeds when im directly connected  from the modem to pc but when i plug in the neduma router things start getting fishy. I have the ps4/pc  wired to the netduma  but my speeds arent so stable getting sometimes 20 , 40, and even got a 10 .

Try setting the congestion levels to 100 and 99. If they are at 70/70 then of course this will show a speed reduction.

Since I'm the only one gaming in late even or at night, I use 100/99 for my settings. I presume that if others were using bandwidth and internet while I was gaming, I'd have to adjust this.

If you have comcast, Im not that far from you. I bought the exact same model cisco that comcast put in (after like 50 other modems) and works well. It was cheap on amazon too. Let me know if you need anymore help or want the exact model number I can get that when Im home.

In my area everybody is actually using Spectrum. But I did check up the compatibility list should work fine with Spectrum. Your using the TP-Link TC7610-E ?

you might also check the NetGear CM600. There was mention of it on the dslreports forum stating it worked well and didn't see issues. The new NG CM1000 is out however I think some users are still seeing some issues with it. I would check into the Arris SB 6183. They sware by it.

I actually checked into the  cm600 but whilst I was looking up the reviews (amazon) I so some complains of it saying it gets too hot. There was one review that said to the extent that it started smelling haha.

Ya that was mentioned on the DSLreports forum as well. One thing you can always do, and I do for my installed router, place a USB laptop cooling fan under routers and or modems. I've been doing this for a while now. Helps keeps heat at bay and allows for better cooling. Some modems and routers have strange case designes and sometimes don't allow for good air flow and ventillation for heat disapation. I found the forced air cooling is a great solution.

Givent that the cm and 6183 , more or less are similar in price what would be the better choice?
