Netduma NOOB please help :)

Hi All,

New to the forum and new to netduma and would really appreciate some advice......

So my set up is virgin media 200mb dl and 10-13mb ul and I have set up my netduma (the previous 2 nights) with superhub acting as router still with all wired and wireless devices using netduma rather than superhub. I have to be honest I have not seen any improvement in my gaming online and still get melted etc.

I have my PS4 wired in using the TP link plug extensions so that it picks up LAN.

I have just read about putting my superhub in modem only mode and I have just done that now and have not played any games yet however just wanted some advice about what else I should do to maximise my gaming experience. I have read about the congestion control and could do with some help understanding that as I watched a YT video from simjc74 and picked up from that video that because I have higher internet speeds I probably need lower download cap % but I am still not too sure....

Also any other tips would be great! I mainly play black ops 3 on playstation 4.

Thanks

Steve

Hi Scuby2010 - Welcome to the #DumaArmy.  Are you a SCUBA guy by any chance?

So, Congestion control for the beginner is what you are looking for here I take it.

Think of Congestion Control as a special bank account only you know about.  The rest of the house is sharing the main account, which is your ISP provided service.  With the congestion control what you are effectively doing is siphoning off some of the bandwidth and holding that in reserve for the house to use when you are gaming.

Why would this be important?

When the rest of the house is opening webpages, flipping through Facebook feeds, streaming movies or YT videos, they are causing ping spikes.  These spikes can play havoc with your gaming, especially in twitch based shooters like CoD and Battlefield.

With the congestion control in place, your gaming session is "protected" against these spikes and pings in traffic.  Coupled with the new Hyper Lane service, which is a free upgraded feature when you get 1.03.06g, you will be able to OPTIMIZE your home network for gaming.  You want this if you are a competitive gamer, and because you are here, you are one.  :D

You can play with the settings to try and achieve a house acceptable norm, but really 70/70 on the sliders works for about 90% of the guys here.  Even the mods and admins, we run all the same settings and versions you guys have unless we are testing new features.

If you house is empty when you are gaming, you can get away with setting the sliders as high as 90/90 or 95/95 if you personally are only gaming.  I don't recommend running wide open (100/100) unless you don't have anything other than the console connected as devices will frequently send out an update request and if it is available, most will begin a download in the background.  You don't want this if you are gaming, or you want to be protected from it happening.

Now, if you are hosting a sleep over with a houseful, you probably want to move the sliders down to 50/50 or greater, to give that much more bandwidth to the household for their streaming/watching needs, but still preserving some of the bandwidth for your gaming.

Does that help?

That's great thanks!

Is there anything else I can do to help with connection? I'm hoping now I've put my super hub in modem only mode I should see a difference as all connections are now running through the netduma.

Thanks

Steve

The superhub is far more stable in modem mode, so you''re definitely doing the right thing there.

Make sure you put your console in the Hyper Lane as Dillinger said too.

Beyond that you will be getting into the can of worms of running Ping Plotter on your ISP line. This would be to see if you have jitter and congestion during games.  I would honestly play with the unit active for a month or two before you really start going much further however as it does kind of become an exercise of chasing perfection in a system that wasn't built for it.  I.E. - Online play of a fast moving FPS game.

Chasing the ping dragon becomes to much after a while...

Hey, welcome to the forum. I would reiterate the above: 70/70 anti-flood, and put the console on hyper traffic. However you could also use the geofilter to improve your gaming; try putting the distance slider on 1000km and the ping assist on 60ms, and maybe try putting strict mode on. This will optimise which host connect to in games. Or, you could try out some of the different profiles, as they will give you optimal settings for a variety of games already.

Just as stated above start with 70/70 and get some hours on those settings so if you do adjust from there you have some good results to go by.
