Rather significant latency recently - Xbox One

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I've recently been experiencing some pretty significant connection and 'lag' issues on my Xbox One while connecting to my NetDuma.  A few days ago I noticed that the 'friends' section of my homescreen was showing everyone to be on their home screens - even know I knew they were currently playing games.  It is still really slow to update (for instance, showing people online long after they log out) but things have started getting worse in multiplayer games yesterday - really significant 'boomerang' latency, as well as being booted from games quite a lot.

I've been mostly playing:  Destiny, Elite Dangerous and Overwatch, having trouble with all of them.

I did a multiplayer connection test from my console as soon as I got booted from both a game and party chat earlier, this is what I ended up with:

Download Speed - 0.30 Mbps

Upload Speed - 0.32 Mbps

Packet Loss - 38% (usually 0%)

MTU - 1480

Latency - 1849 ms (usually under 100 ms)

Wireless Strength - 45% (around normal, but it's never been an issue thus far)

NAT type - cone NAT

My connection has never been top notch, but this is the worst I've ever seen it.  Testing multiplayer connection from my Xbox a few times today has shown some better results, but Latency has been consistently bad.

Running a Ping diagnosis from the router shows the following:

Ping - Good

Jitter - Exceptional

Spikes - Exceptional

Packet Loss - Lost 2

Ping

I'm not sure what most of this means - though it's looking like my router's finding things to be much better than my Xbox.

I've tried leaving both my router and Xbox One unplugged overnight, no luck.  If it helps, I'm located in Northern Ireland, my ISP is BT and I'm running the 1.03.6g software on my NetDuma.

If any of you knowledgeable folks have any suggestions or insights into my problem - I'd really appreciate it!

Hi Nephron,

I wouldn't worry about other peoples 'status' as to whether they're online or not, I think this is just Xbox Live being a bit slow. I've noticed this a few times too.

Although the Duma only gives a snapshot of the ping to 8.8.8.8 it looks nice and stable (envy, mine's all over the place).

Have you changed anything recently, tried any different settings in your Duma or other router/hub or your Xbox or anything like that could have inadvertently messed it up? Because 1849ms is a whopper!

And is that the Xbox One 'network settings' page ping?

I'm pretty sure this pings the Microsoft servers in Seattle, so are you sure you usually get under 100ms to that because most people in the UK see 150ms+ there (purely based on a rough average I've come to by asking people I've played with).

Obviously you're a bit closer to Seattle than we mainlanders are but I wouldn't have thought you were that much closer to gain a 30%+ decrease in ping time. Regardless, 1800ms is a bit of shocker though so something isn't right.

Could something have happened to one of your ethernet cables, something heavy pinching one, family members fiddling, or pets messing about with them, I found a mouse had wrecked some cables at my house until I gave the cats carte blanche to disembowel the little f*cker.

I don't know what a cone NAT is, I've only ever seen 'Open' on mine but I know others get Moderate / Strict sometimes but 'cone'...

I've never noticed it say 'cone' at least, can anyone else enlighten me?

The packet loss is not necessarily a problem with your connection, a lot of people have been reporting some issues with pinging 8.8.8.8 lately.

If you download pingplotter you can ping some alternative 'big' names (I ping BBC usually) and see if it's you or 'them', I won't go into details about pingplotter because there are loads of posts about it in here already but if you have any trouble just ask and plenty of us will be able to advise.

*Also, special shout out to Northern Ireland, had many good times playing CoD with you lads.

Yeah as CB said the first thing I'd check is a new ethernets cable, also a hard reset of console, press and hold the xbox button for 10 seconds until you here the little buzz then pull out the power cable from the back and press the xbox button on the console 2/5 times draining any power still in the xbox, plug the power cable back in and wait for the light to turn on Orange on the power brick then turn on the console by the button on the console

Thanks for both of your replies.

I haven't changed any settings at recently - be it on my Xbox One or NetDuma.  As far as I know, nothing has changed that would cause something like this to occur.  I poked about all the ethernet cables etc. and can't see any loose wires or things sitting on top of them - I unplugged and re-plugged them in anyway just in case, as well as doing another hard reset of both my Xbox and router.

Unfortunately, none of this has helped - I'm still seeing really bad bouts of 'boomerang' latency, making any kind of multiplayer gameplay nigh on impossible, if I don't get booted within a minute or two.

Boom, the 'normal' ping I mentioned in my original post was that of any netspeed tests I do from my computer, I can't remember what it was from any previous Xbox 'network settings' scans.

I appreciate the suggestions anyway - is there anything else I could try as a next step do you reckon?

Are you setup like this...

BT homehub > Netduma > Devices?

Duma in the BT hub DMZ and wifi disabled on the BT hub?

Do you have the BT hub to the Duma + the Duma to the Xbox via ethernet?

I've got the Duma in the BT Hub DMZ with BT Hub's wifi disabled.  The two are connected via ethernet, but my Xbox is connected wirelessly.  Unfortunately it's impossible to get a wired connection with my house's setup - I'm aware this is less than ideal, but it hasn't been a problem so far.

Try downloading one of those wifi channel checking apps to see what all your neighbours are on (the defaults most likely) and then pick the least congested channel.

Obviously if someone is chewing your bandwidth up then that won't be helping either.

Also, might be worth swapping that ethernet cable BT hub > Duma out completely, just in case.

If neither of those help then a set of homeplugs should make a difference (assuming it's the wifi), I used to use them before I drilled some holes around the house and cabled it myself - I think I had some devolo homeplugs, cheap and cheerful but they worked fine. If you get them from Amazon and they make no difference then you can always send them back anyway. God bless Amazon's return policy.

Keep us posted too

I'm 100% sure that nobody's nicking the bandwidth - I live in a rural area, and the only neighbours close enough to see my wi-fi signal probably don't even know what computers do.  I know the fact that I'm a bit far from civilisation may be affecting my internet a bit - but as I said, it's not been a problem while gaming for years, and nothing has changed as far as I know.

I might try out those homeplugs though, thanks for the suggestion!

I'm actually leaving to head to Japan for a few weeks on Saturday, so I'll try sorting this out when I get back.  Unless the internet fairies have magically fixed the problem by then!

Thanks again.

I meant people in your own house nicking your bandwidth by the way (just in case you thought I meant the neighbours) - but that's what congestion control and hyper lane are for really.

Still worth checking the wifi channels, you'd be amazed by how far the wifi will reach on some of the shitty isp hubs!

I can see about 20 at the moment and the houses in my road are all detached.

Definitely worth a punt on the homeplugs, nice and cheap and easily returnable to Amazon (assuming you don't go to town on the box like Wolverine in heat).

Nice, I've always fancied going to Japan!

Heres what I suggest, have 70/70 anti-flood, share excess enabled and reset device prio.

For Destiny have strict mode disabled. The other games have the Geo-filter disabled. Does this prevent the booting?

What is the typical ping to a game as shown by the duma?
