Unstable Jitter/Spikes

Can someone please help me because i'm seeing inconsistent results when I run a ping test on the netduma interface sometimes it will show that my ping is ok, and my jitter and spikes are good with no packet loss. Then the next time I run the test it will say my ping is ok with bad jitter and terrrible spikes. It really affects my playing especially when i'm on Destiny. My router is up to date 1.03.5m, and my modem/router it's connected to is an Arris TG1672. Can anyone explain to me why this might be happening?

Hey TMG, welcome to the forum :)

Do you find that this happens at any specific time of day? It sounds like it could be an ISP issue. Would you be able to run pingplotter on your connection for a day and see when it is happening?

You're not alone I bet if 50% or more of the forum members ran tests constantly they would find this issue.

It is over utilized under provisioned lines provided by your ISP that causes congestion.

Keep the results of these tests to show your ISP.

https://www.pingplotter.com/download.htmlping plotter pro free for 30 days will show jitter and packet loss on your line.

Unlike the netduma test it does not shut down all aspects of your line while it tests so you will have to keep the line free while you do.

Type 8.8.8.8 into target and press go.

I have been having a similar issue. On testing the line through DSL Speed test I was moving the CC sliders until I achieved A+ on Bufferbloat

When I tried Internet Diagnostics it ok, bad, terrible, no packet loss. This continued when I moved the CC slider up and down it didn't change for the better.

I got better results when I ticked the Reactive algorithm and put the CC back to 70%. I then did the Internet diagnostic again and it was good, good exceptional, no packet loss.

I had the preemptive algorithm ticked originally as I have read, on here that it seems to be better for gaming. I think it all depends on the variables, I.e. Your ISP, time of day, your max speeds, the game your playing.

Hope that has been a bit of help to you :) Oh and welcome to the forum, was almost forgetting my manners :)

The line will change as other users of your ISP download and stream then stop giving you different results not where your sliders are.

It is greed by your ISP, or they do not know there is a congestion/contention issue and should be informed, no one should put up with this, get them informed guys.

its deffo this as zennon has already shown on mine  as i get bad jitter but not always as some times of the day my ping is a solid 25ms but other times its all over the place with a little packet loss and bo3 is unplayable

I agree with what you are saying, I can only show what happened in my experience, as son as I changed fron the Preemptive to Reactive algorithm the Internet Diagnostic went to Good, Good, Exceptional, No Packet loss.

Unfortunately I didn't play BO3 to see if it made any difference to the game :)

I have just done an internet diagnosis with my sliders on 100% and results were good, good, good, no packet loss

Adjusted sliders to 70% results were Good, Exceptional,Exceptional, No packet loss,

Conclude what you will from those results

I ran ping plotter for a while and these were the results on the graph. Do you think I should still contact my ISP?

It would be better if we could see the whole ping plotter GUI if you could.

It is showing packet loss on hops 11 12 and 13 and peaks of 652ms pings at one point.

were you using the internet while you tested?

Posted

No I was away while the test was running, but someone else in my house might have been using the internet while I was gone.

This seems to work pretty well for me. I have played a few games of BO3 and Destiny without any problems.

Were you using congestion control at the time?

No I don't think so.

If others are using the net you should always use CC when gaming or testing for jitter.

Better still kick everyone off while you do it.
