Hi all! Decided to pick up the Netduma router in the hopes that my nightly Black Ops 2 sessions have less lag and hitmarker rage.

I read through the wiki, watched setup videos and searched the forums for possible answers to any issues that I was having.  However, I am feeling a little overwhelmed and I hope you guys can tell me if I am heading in the right direction.

Setup:

Time Warner Cable (Brooklyn) - 100/10 mbps

Netduma

Apple Airport Router (N Router)

Modem is connected to Netduma and one port on the Duma is connected to the Apple Router for my laptop and cellphone. PS3 is wired directly to the Duma.  Wifi is disabled on the Duma. Updated the software 10/1/15

Observations/Issues:

1. Having done Speedtest constantly, I know that prior to the Duma, I was getting 100+/10+ on 5ghz wifi (on macbook air). After connecting the Duma to the modem and then to the Apple Router the max I would get is 50+/10+ on wifi.

2. Previous PS3 connection was via wifi and aside from some really bad games - I normally have 2.0-4.0 KD on TDM.  After the Duma, KDs are normally between 1.5-2.0+ KD

3. Less host migrations after the Duma however some of the hit detection is still horrible - one opponent killed me while shooting way above my head while I was prone on the floor.  I watched the killcam and he was shooting at the air but getting hitmarkers and eventually killed me.  One of my biggest issues is seeing the enemy on my screen so much later that they do.  I register one or two bullets hitting me but while looking at the killcam I see that I was strolling towards them oblivious that they were there right in front of me shooting at me. Is this something the router can help with or this is just an issue with Black Ops 2?

4. Is it possible to switch up the configuration to Modem--->Apple Router---->Netduma instead of Modem--->Netduma--->Apple Router? Would this hinder the Duma from working properly?

5. What can I do to make sure that my experience is consistent as it doesn't feel like it is.

BTW, actually tried AW and it was actually playable this time around (I gave up after a week of playing it).

I've attached screenshots of my settings.  I would appreciate any suggestions :)

Thank you in advance.

Jen

Hi Jen, welcome to the forum :)

I'll go through your questions and answer them in the order you asked them.

  1. Were you doing the speed test with congestion control set to 100%?
  2. Hopefully fixing some of the other problems will help you do as good as you used to in games :)
  3. Are you able to post a picture of the internet diagnostics on the Netduma and also a ping graph from in a game.
  4. You could do that but you'd lose out on the Netduma congestion control feature as not all devices are going through the Netduma.
  5. Knowing what your in game pings are and your base ping (the info from point 3) should help work out why this is.

Under Settings>Misc I would unselect Multicast Snooping, and Wifi workaround (if you are NOT using the wifi on the R1).  I would select these> Enable Cookies, Stealth Mode, and Bleeding Edge.  These are suggestions that are based on the screen shots that you posted.  These suggestions should help with speed and streamline you gaming process.

Done! Will run a couple of games to see what happens.  Thank you!

Hi Crossy!

1. When I first ran the speedtest, I did not have congestion control set up.  I just changed it and i got 63.84/7.89.  Ping is 8 ms.

2. Awesome! I have a Benq monitor which is such a big difference from my TV.  Really want the Duma to contribute to a less rage inducing gaming experience.

3. Attaching Ping Diagnostics and In Game Ping.

4. Noted.  That's what I figured.  However, I would like to recover that extra 30-40 mbps that is missing from the apple router wifi since the router was hooked up to the Netduma.  Otherwise, will probably downgrade internet speed since I am not able to utilize it.

5. Noted.  Attaching Ping Diagnostics and In Game Ping screenshots.  Are my geo-filter settings reasonable?  Also, when making changes in the settings and such - would it be a good idea to reboot the ps3 or it doesn't matter?

I made the changes the Buck Nasssty suggested and found that I started connecting to players outside my geo-filter.  I ran a few scenarios and it saw that when I had the WIFI workaround selected that I would get connected to players WITHIN the geo-filter.  Took screenshots for comparison.  Those games without the WIFI workaround were horrendous.  Tons of lag. I checked my PS3s connection to the router and confirmed that I did set it up as wired.  I'm a little confused.

Should I have UPNP enabled in Misc Settings?

Also,  noticed that in some matches - I pause for a second which is usually an indicator that there is an enemy player in the vicinity.

  1. When you run the speed test can you make sure you have everything set up as shown here. The screen shots seam to show that you already have it set up like that but it would be good to just check :)
  2.  -
  3.  -
  4. Even if you're not getting the full speeds to one device, all the separate devices may be able to utilise the total speeds. It would be also good to check to see what speeds you are getting on a wired device that is connected to then apple router.
  5. I think it is possible that the reason you are connecting to hosts outside of the GeoFilter range is because you don't have the device enabled. The button should say 'Disable' underneath the device. (See pic here). For the other GeoFilter settings, I would possibly decrease the ping assist to 40ms. I think the Wifi workaround thing was a coincidence as you should't have been connecting to hosts outside of the GeoFilter anyway :)

And just out of curiosity, how did you get 'Admin Mode' on the router? :)

1. Went to that page of the Wiki yesterday and set it according to the instructions there.

3. I only have one old laptop that can connect to the apple router directly.  I'll test it when I get it back.  All other devices are wireless.

4. Geo-Filter was enabled the whole time. The button on the page says "Disable". I have not disabled it since the first day I got it.

I bought the router from someone in the UK (ebay).  They mentioned in the post that it had admin mode. Haven't been able to find any information about it other than it sends data for the developers use.  Think it was someone from Epsilon since the theme enabled on the router was an Epsilon one but it went away when I updated the software.

Ok. There is going to be an update released soon which takes the router to gigabit speeds so you could wait until then to rule out the Netduma being a bottle neck. Also, if you do a wired test through the apple router and the speeds are low, try doing one through the Netduma too :)

Can you follow this guide to see why you were connecting to hosts outside of your GeoFilter.

Ah, ok :) The theme means that the person who bought it used an epsilon discount code I think.

The wifi workaround is only for issues with wifi dropouts with the R1's wifi.  And if you do not have the R1's wifi enabled there is not reason to have it enabled.

Hey welcome to the forum, couple of things to add, if you're not using the R1 wifi, have you turned it off from settings > wifi? If not please do so as this would prevent potential interference between the R1 and Apple router, once you've done this try a speed test. It may have sped up after this, if not on your Apple router make sure you have the least congested best channel selected, you can find out how to find this here http://www.howtogeek.com/197268/how-to-find-the-best-wi-fi-channel-for-your-router-on-any-operating-system/

Also do a wired test from the DUMA & Apple as Crossy said.

I would also try turning PA to 0 and see if you have better games.

Thank you.  Glad to be here :)

Yup, turned off the WIFI a day into having it.  My laptop was having a hard time picking up the ssid. The speed tests that I posted were done with the WIFI disabled on the Duma. I really just purchased the Duma for COD.

I've had the router for about 4+ years and there has been no change in my internet.  Appreciate the tips on how to change the channel to a less congested one but it was working fine for years before connecting the Apple router to the Duma (I constantly ran speed tests if I was having a particularly laggy game - the speed rarely deviated from 100/10+).  Hopefully the software update that ups the Duma speeds to Gigabit will return the missing speed.

Will try dialing down the PA to 0 and will report if there are any significant changes. Thank you.

I disabled it along with the multicast snooping function.  Haven't run into any issues after that.  Thank you :)

Great.  Have your issues been resolved? Is it ok to close the thread?

My main issue of more consistent games has not been resolved with all the tips given in the thread.  I do appreciate the help though.

I don't know that the router has improved my issues with Black Ops 2.  I noticed a bigger difference when I switched from a regular tv to a gaming monitor than I do with the Netduma.  I did see that AW is a lot more playable now but it has not been the game that I have been playing for almost 3 years.

I will keep using it until Black Ops 3 and see if it makes a difference (vs. Apple Router).  Otherwise, it just isn't the router for me. I guess it is ok to close the thread.

Thank you guys! Have a good night.

You won't always have great games, theres a lot of variants on the internet, other players connections etc so its not going to be 100% perfect at all times but these are the things I would try

  1. Set your home location, then put the distance really small, press the 'Snap' button (right of magnifying glass) a few times to auto expand the Geo-filter to an optimum size for getting games.
  2. Enable strict mode, this should get you very close games, you can also - Disable strict mode, this will allow more games to be connected to, they may appear outside of your filter.
  3. Move your home until you get a different host or padlock appear (you may have to restart the game but may not) and keep in mind our anti-cheat if you connect to games and continue to try and find other hosts.

1. I snapped it twice from the smallest distance (like it said in the wiki). What is a reasonable distance?  I have mine at 1277 km.

2. I've played with strict mode on. PA to 0. A friend lobbied up with me but I was having issues so I just had him join me in the game after I joined one.  Did not make that much of a difference.

3. So I am to move the home pointer to another state that's beside my own state?  I try not to make changes while in a game because I turn the ps3 on and off to make sure the changes are being applied.

Do the Geo-Filter and Ping Assist work together to get me into the best lobby or is it one or the other?

I have stopped myself from being a person who says negative things about a product without trying to find a solution.  However, these last few days of being a Netduma owner have been trying.

It's not the end of the world or a very serious issue but when you do the research and purchase a product that has "Dominate Lag" on the packaging itself you don't expect it to invite Lag to move in and make room for it in the closet. This has been my experience.  I've experienced lag while being the host of a lobby with just one other person.  Someone in the same state - less than 50 miles away.  I've experienced lag without being the host of a lobby. I've ran scenarios to find solutions to my issues based on the suggestions in this thread.  To no avail.

You speak about variants on the internet - isn't this what the router seeks to address?  To eliminate the variants that cause issues? To do this with minimal tweaking?

It is more accurate to say "Dominate Lag - unless certain variants prevent you from doing so".

Don't want to sound like an a**hole but I am very very frustrated and disappointed.  I had high expectations for this product - too high it seems.

If you were host and you were lagging then that can't be a Networking issue and is probably something the Netduma can't resolve as it is a problem with the game. Is it AW that you are having problems with? If it is then maybe you could try one of the different CoDs and see how it plays :)

AW is actually playable now but I really only play Black Ops 2. I tried being host and not being host.  I had better games with my friend being the host - he's not using a netduma. This has always been the case.
