Loss of 'accepted' friends each time their ISP resets...

Recommended Posts

I did perform, albeit cursory, an earnest search effort on this particular subject; if I missed it then kindly redirect me and of course my apologies :)

I have more or less about 20 friends so far whom I've so far "accepted" as per allow + deny settings. (This pertains to ps4 party chat and codaw for what it's worth.)

ONE of them, and one of three who reside in a different country than myself (note - no problems with the other two), is unable to connect in game nor can we hear each other in party chat... after 18-36 hrs or so.

We speculate that this correlates with whenever his ISP resets his modem (You know, the whole DHCP thing). Said friend has Telus (NW Canada), and he mentioned that as part of his service the ISP "masks" his true location as part of a security feature that comes with his package.

Interestingly, this is further supported by my noting that each time I have to 're-accept' him (my only current workaround), the circle thing on my geo map that's corresponding to him, is always, yep, in a different location. lol.

*Has anyone else experienced this?, and/or other than my always having to re-accept him ~every couple of days, is there any other know workaround to more efficiently if not permanently address this issue?

I have everything up to date and indeed this is only happening with one person thus far on my list of those I'd like to 'accept'.

I will be glad to answer any other questions you feel may be relevant .

Thanks for reading and do share any thoughts you may have.

Cheers!

So you mean you have to keep re-adding him to your allowed list? :) If thats right then I'm afraid there isn't anything you can really do about this because the problem seams to be that he has a dynamic IP and it changes often. There isn't really a permanent solution for this that I know of.

Interesting and I hadn't thought about that lol. Yes. I'm just surprised that it's only been one person so far... he clearly has the most 'dynamic' of the group so far :P so on that note who knows, perhaps as time goes on then I'll be dealing more and more with this.

Thanks for the prompt response nonetheless.

Hey man!

I have the same "problem" like you mentioned above.

Friends of mine live in Germany and it shows me every time on the Geofilter that they are in France :S

So I reaccept them and every time they reset their routers or something like that I have to do that again.

Don't know if it's their ISP or the R1? I think it's the ISP when they manage their IP adresses?

Cheers

Thx Dali - good to know its not just me. I'm fairly certain it's on the end of the ISP; it was explained to me that the 'relocation' we are experiencing is part of an added security feature from the ISP.

Each time I allow someone I do take a second and type in their name so I also have a quick reference to who they are... on that note, it'll still be a nuisance no doubt but not a total catastrophe lol... I mean that, my main concern at this point is, once the max limit of allowances is reached (I vaguely recall reading somewhere that the current limit is 200, but don't quote me on it)... that's gonna be a painstaking hunt on our end, or, of clicking each of the "200 circles" and trying to find the subset of all the 'expired' ones lols. Ugh

I'm not a tech-guy but I think that it would be advantageous to be able to save friends via console mac adresses or consoles in general. So when a friend shows up on the Geofilter in a Country that I have excluded, he could be permanent allowed regardless of his location and IP adress?

I am aware of the anti-cheat feature and that's ok with me. But there should be an option that should allow people to add friends like mentioned above. Not to block them or deny - just the option allow for that case.

A friend of mine told me that the dislocation of my added friends results from their ISPs displacement of the IP adresses to other countrys.

Have a nice day :)

It wouldn't be possibly to do it via MAC address because that's only visible over the first hop :)

Hey nollies, as said theres nothing you can do other than keep re adding him when his IP changes. Also you can go way beyond 200 so not sure where you read that :P You could remove previous ones where you have added him, just click on the circle and click reset :)

My friend is digging around in his modem/ router settings to see if it's some feature he can toggle on/off, and if no go plans to call his isp to see if it's removable on their end for him. I'll post any updates.

True true that mac would be nice but as noted it doesn't work that way unfortunately. Good thought tho in concept lol, hell my friend even gave me his IP thinking I could just 'hack him' (I mean teasingly, but yeah the crazy dude coughed it over... but obviously that won't work either).

Maybe a search feature where I could pull up all entries of 'person x' and remove all the outdated ones. But, since the 200 number thing seems moot perhaps this isn't as critical as I had thought.

Thanks everyone for popping in here and adding yer two cents!

You guys would definitely know better than me especially since it's possible I haven't had the Netduma long enough for the other 19 friends' ISPs to cycle(? lol), but I'm assuming for now it's just this one guy who's been a challenge per se, like maybe he had some additional firewall setting(?), I won't know til later when we try to connect. Here's his last message to me: "Will see. I just set the firewall to low and changed some stuff"

Lol

It, um, 'kinda' worked but not really. lol

I embarrassingly admit that being new to this whole 'Ima get my network all running like a beast' endeavor that I completely failed to realize just that... that, every time some friend's ISP decides to change the IP (I know I know, stop laughing!) that I gotta repeat the whole process of sending a game invite, click on his 'circle', and adding him/her to the Allow list. I say this because

-today, a second friend couldn't connect to me until re-allowing him; and

- friend 1, referenced above, still needs to be re-allowed... although his router tinkering kinda worked in that rather than every day having to re-allow him, it now seems to be less frequently. Weird. Well, his whole thing is weird because unlike my other friends, this guy (until he lightened up his firewall) literally had his 'circle' showing up all over the world each time we would try to party up.

I've had the router a week now and the other 18 of the 20 friends however I've yet to have to re-allow them yet.

In either case, nothing against ND as conceptually I get it, but holy moley what a nuisance.

(Final thought) Since this whole endeavor was clearly due to my ignorance and misunderstanding that I'd have to re-allow my friends every time their DHCP kicks in... I submit to those running the forum to kindly consider deleting this post altogether. I appreciate everyone chiming in here but basically I'm completely fine with accepting this little journey of mine as being a big and hearty duhhhhhh on my part :P

Good to here you're getting the hang of it :) It's definitely pretty annoying! If it's alright with you, it would probably be best not to delete it as I promise you you're not the only one who's had this question (far from) and you definitely won't be the last :) Having the thread open will help others in the future who will undoubtably have the same question.

As it's sorted I'll close the thread - feel free to make a new one with anymore questions :)
