datsuag
Hi. I live with my family, I have 2 little brothers, one of which uses his iPad pretty much all the time when he's at home. Mostly he's watching netflix or youtube or something and it completely craps up my gaming. In other words I am having the problem that I paid you guys like 180€ to fix. Needless to say I am less than happy with the situation. The Netduma R1 works just fine as a router, in fact I haven't found a single way that it performs worse than the one our ISP gave us for free a few years ago. Unfortunately I also have yet to see any way that it performs better than the old router, which leaves me wondering why I spent 10% of my monthly paycheck on it. I mean sure, it has a nice interface which allows me to see exactly who is messing up my gaming at any given moment but it doesn't seem to do anything about it. I've tested my bandwidth with speedtest.net and I've tried setting the speed to the same amount it measured and to a slightly lower amount with no different results. I've tried all kinds of Download/Upload cap settings, all the way from 50-100% and the only thing I've observed is that I seem to lag more the lower I set it, when other people are streaming video that is. As an example both of my brothers are using a lot of bandwidth at the moment, the download/upload caps were set to 60% and my ping was floating around 300 on a server which I usually have 50 ping on. I then increased it to 80% and my ping is now floating at around 150, which is better but still pretty much unplayable in CS:GO, especially when you also have packet loss. I am paying for 5mbit/s down and like 500kbit/s up, though recently it seems to have dropped to 2/0.3mbit/s because my ISP is horrible and unfortunately I literally don't have any alternatives. Right now my game is using less than 300kbit/s down and less than 50kbit/s up, and my packets are not getting through because I have two people using every bit of available bandwidth on top of that. Which is fine, on a normal router I would expect unplayable amounts of lag, but I'm not using a normal router. I am using a rather expensive router which was explicitly advertised as a solution to exactly this problem, and I don't think I am wrong to be a little frustrated about the fact that it doesn't. I'd appreciate it if someone would guide me to a working solution or a refund, because as it stands right now I am not at all getting what I paid for. Thanks for reading. PS: I already did follow the directions in this guide. Didn't change anything.
Netduma Staff Netduma Crossy Posted August 12, 2015 Netduma Staff Share Posted August 12, 2015 Hello datsuag, Can you set the congestion control sliders to 65%. The go to the device prioritisation, disable 'Share Excess' and allocate your gaming device 50%. Make sure you have the pre-emptive algorithm. it is also really important that you've entered the speeds you are receiving at the moment into the congestion control page otherwise the whole of the congestion control on the Netduma won't function correctly. In your case enter the lowest speeds you usually get. If this doesn't fix the lag, can you post a screen shot of a detailed internet diagnostics of the Netduma. Finally, can you confirm that you are on the latest version?
datsuag
Hello Crossy, and thank you for the quick reply. The rugrats just went to bed so I had to use my phone as a bandwidth hog and I think I've found a/the problem. Our upload speed is simply too low for several simultaneous users. When I am the only one using my network and I have upload speed set to 0.4mbit/s, Upload Cap set to 100% with myself prioritized to 50% and Share Excess off, I still get lag. If I turn on Share Excess the lag stops. I did some testing and found that I need to set the prioritization for myself to over 90% in order to get close to ideal gaming conditions, which means the other devices will be left at 1% each and that's too little to even watch a youtube video on my phone; Obviously not enough. I think the measly 300kbit/s upload delivered by our ISP is just not enough for several users. I think I need almost all of that on my own for lag-free gaming, and no matter how I tweak the netduma settings that won't change. If that is indeed the case, which it seems to be, I can't really blame you for it and I apologize for my heated essay up there. I'll try calling my ISP tomorrow and explaining the situation for them, they are a pretty small local operation so I might just be able to convince them to increase it a bit. Thanks for your time, I'll see what I can do on my end for now.
Netduma Staff Netduma Crossy Posted August 12, 2015 Netduma Staff Share Posted August 12, 2015 Ok, no problem I think that the Netduma should be able to deal with that though as I was in the same situation as you and it did for me The device prioritisation is only for upload, so if you leave them with 1%, they will still be able to watch YouTube as that uses download. Also, you said it works better with share excess on, so they would still be able to use whatever you're not using But if your ISP can help you increase your speeds that would definitely make the situation much better. datsuag
I'm no expert in this matter so I might be completely wrong but as far as I know services like YouTube and Netflix etc actually do use a bit of upload bandwidth as well, the computer sends feedback to the server to tell it that the video packets made it there and that everything is as it should be. It's not much but in any case I couldn't get my phone to even start loading a youtube video when it was limited to 2% with Share Excess off. You're right, there will be some ulpoad used but I thought you would still have been able to uploa a vid. If you have Share Excess enabled does that fix the vid loading issue. Also is the game playable with it disabled?

Everything works quite fine with share excess enabled, however I am getting some lag in game while loading a youtube video on my phone. At the moment I'm having some "background lag" though, so I'm not sure how much is caused by the phone. My ISP is really bad some times.
MrWhooz
Your issue is your upload is very low. I remember i had the same issue. CsGo in particular takes around 200-300 kbits to run optimally. So when you set the cap at 70/70 your pc doesn't have enough bandwidth for you to play cs.go. By reading the thread it appears your problem is on the "download" stream. So i would recommend giving your pc (or gaming device) all of the upload (via device prioritization), keep the upload at 100% on the slider, but set the download bar to 70%. Seems like sound advice, that is exactly what I concluded and did as well. Thanks!
