DHCP problem resumes...

Recommended Posts

Once again my router is not assigning ip addresses. I have tried practically everything and it keeps happening. Can someone please help asap because everyone in my house is tired of me playing with the internet. Thanks for the help.

Lets start again because we must have missed something as we've been through just about everything.

So can you factory reset the duma then set it up without the nighthawk.

The reboot the PC you want to connect to it, connecting to the duma wired and turn wifi off on the pc. See what the IP is.

I've had this problem before with a netgear wireless repeater. It somehow took over assigning IPs, not sure how that even happens. It was before I had my R1 - so the issue might have been something different but I had to make sure that DHCP was turned off on the netgear.

I removed the nighthawk but the problem resumes :( I got it working for like 2 hours. I fogured out that the router isnt assiging false ips, its not assiging ips at all, so the devices try to assign themselves ips.

Are you on the latest version (1.03.4)? If not can you upgrade here. Are you doing this on a wired device? If you are could you connect a phone to the Netduma and see if that gets a good IP? Is this happening on all devices or just some?

If a device on a network can't find a DHCP server it will self assign itself an ip beginning with 169.xxx.

What IP addresses are your devices getting?

Yes, the lan page is still the same. Havent touched anything there.

Ok so that device being assigned 192.168.107.1 is getting that IP from somewhere, it's not a self assigned IP so either there is a DHCP server on the network somewhere or the device itself has been manually configured with an IP address.

Is there any other networking device on the network that might be assigning an IP?  What is this device that has been assigned 192.168.107.1, can you check its configuration and make sure that it's IP assignment is set to auto (not manual).

Also you mention the nighthawk is not on the network, can you make sure it's powered down.  It can still assign wireless IPs if it's powered up even if it's not plugged in.

I dont think amything else on the network could be assigining ips. The only router i have on the network is the duma. Every device on the network says the 192.168.107.1 as the default gateway when set to automatic.

That is really bizarre.  I've been doing networking for 15 years and I have never seen that happen, the devices are obviously being given that IP from somewhere but without digging into your network it's pretty hard to diagnose.

As a cheap and dirty fix have you tried changing the R1's default IP to 192.168.107.1 so at least the devices are pointing to the correct IP as a default gateway?

Do computers assign ips, because thats all i could really think of. Ill try it and see if it works.

Servers with DHCP can assign IP addresses and maybe some funky stuff going on if you have a computer with Internet sharing enabled but generally computers wouldn't assign an IP.

If the cheap fix doesn't work what I would do is strip everything back to barebones.

So turn off wi-fi on the R1 and connect a single PC to it via LAN cable and check results.  If you get a correct IP assignments start adding back devices incrementally till things go wrong again and pinpoint the culprit.

The family will be even less happy with this course of action I'd say :P

The dirty fix didnt work :P, ill try finding the source of the problem

Could you try just setting the Netduma IP back to normal (192.168.88.1) and then doing 'ipconfig' in cmd. Whatever the default gateway is, type that into the browser and see if it takes you anywhere. If it does, can you post a screen shot.

Also, you said you are using power line adapters. Could you remove those and connect with a direct wire to the Netduma. It could be interfere with other peoples power line adapters or something like that.

When i plug it in ethernet, it works but if i unplug and go wireless it doesnt. Tgis is getting frustrating

Ok - can you check to make sure your wireless adapter has an automatic IP. Could you post a screen shot of the settings for the wireless adapter please.

(disregard my previous post - I send it before I saw your latest one :) )

Seems to be working for some devices, and not others. Is there a way i can just give all the things on my network a static ip address from the router?

Yes, go to Settings >> DHCP Lease and you can set them from there. But is there something specific about the devices that aren't working? E.g are they all wireless, a specific OS, a specific band, all running of power line adapters etc?
