Hello, I am having trouble enabling IPv6 on my network. My ISP is Starlink and I have the Gen 1(Circular Dish) connected to the Netduma R3 router(I am not using the Starlink router). I'm on firmware v4.0.645 and I have both the WAN and LAN IPv6 settings enabled. To my understanding Starlink supports IPv6 on all Starlink dishes as well as the R3 router, however I cannot get an IPv6 address when testing it via the "test-ipv6.com" website.

Things I've tried:
-Power Cycling Starlink(also unplugging it for a few minutes)
-Rebooting Router(unplugging it for a few minutes as well)
-Factory Resetting Router
-Using only the WAN IPv6 option and disabling the LAN IPv6

It's not that big of a deal if I can't obtain an IPv6 address as I just wanted to check it out to see how it compares to IPv4 and if I notice any improvement, but if anyone knows any solutions I would appreciate it.

Thank you.

I would suggest first connecting a PC direct to the dish and seeing whether you can get an IPv6 address that way

What does that mean exactly? Unplugging the Starlink Ethernet cable from the WAN port on the router and plugging that into my PC?

Hello Pringles,

That would be correct. Connect the starlink directly to your PC to see if the starlink is even giving out any IPV6 addresses.. Then you would know for sure.  Im not familiar with starlink but I would think it should work similar to other type of connection setups.. Has it ever worked for you before you added the R3?

Thanks!

Zippy.

Yes that's right, exactly as above

Ok after I connected my PC directly to the dish I did get an IPv6 address. Before I had the R3 I used the XR500 and I remember being able to get an IPv6 address when I enabled it, but at the time with Starlink it was hit or miss whether it stayed on or not so I just kept it disabled.

I did as described and I did get an IPv6 address

Okay great thanks, you said you don't use their router but do you have the router so you could test dish > starlink router > R3 to see if you get IPv6 that way?

I managed to get my Starlink router and set it up as you said(dish>Starlink router>R3) and that allowed me to get an IPv6 address, which is great. This setup though means I now have two Wi-Fi networks. I guess I can hide the Starlink network to resolve that so it's not that important. What I am concerned about now is Double NAT, specifically for Call of Duty and the Xbox services. Using only the Netduma R3 on IPv4 I port forwarded the Xbox/COD ports to my PC and got an Open NAT that way. Now I'm only getting a moderate NAT type when I load up Call of Duty. I disabled the Port Forward section and loaded up COD to see if my NAT would change, but it didn't work. I also made sure Call of Duty was able to bypass the firewall.

There is no bypass option within the Starlink app for my specific router(Gen 1). Apparently not using the Starlink router at all and using your own router is how you bypass it. Putting the R3 in bypass/bridge mode is also not an option as I want to use the R3 features. Is there any way to solve this with my current setup? Or am I forced to order the Gen 3 Starlink router(that supports bypass) if I want to have both IPv6 and an Open NAT?

Okay great so something with their IPv6 implementation the R3 doesn't like, I believe we're making some improvements in this area so it may not need to be a permanent solution. Does the gen1 router have any port forwarding settings or a DMZ? The R3 doesn't have a bridge mode anyway so that wouldn't be possible.

If you want to have IPv6 & an Open NAT and the gen1 doesn't have port forwarding/DMZ then yes you'd need to get a gen 2 at least. I would say though that in both cases, IPv6 & Open NAT you're not really going to see much benefit to your gaming experience. NAT determines who you're able to connect to, as the game is dedicated server based this isn't an issue. If you play with people then as long as they have an Open NAT you won't have any issues connecting to them. IPv6 is useful because NAT isn't a concern any more so if you can get an Open NAT bypassing the gen1 then really that's the best option. This is what Xbox says about the benefits of IPv6:

"Internet Protocol version 6 is the most current network protocol, offering several improvements over IPv4. Most important, IPv6 expands the number of possible IP addresses (the unique numbers that represent every device on the internet). And—most useful for Xbox—the expansion removes the need for Network Address Translation (NAT), which can interfere with multiplayer gaming and chat over IPv4 networks."

If I were you I'd just do dish > R3, you'll get an Open NAT so you're getting the benefits of what either would offer you and you don't need to use an extra router or pay for another.

Oh I see. Well in that case then yes I will probably go back to the dish>R3 setup soon so I can have an Open NAT and not have to use two routers. What got me interested in trying IPv6 was to hopefully fix this annoying bug I've been experiencing with Xbox Game Bar. When using the party chat feature, if I leave and rejoin a party(or join a different party) it would break my audio as I can no longer hear or speak to anyone. The only way to fix this bug is to switch my audio output and input to something else within the party audio setting and then change it back. Some solutions online said that IPv6 could solve it, but I tested it just now while on the dish>Starlink router>R3 setup and the bug is still there. Annoying to deal with but not the end of the world. Anyways maybe I'll convince my Xbox friends to use Discord instead and just bypass this problem lol. Thanks for the help I appreciate it.

It may be the Geo-Filter and that you need to allow them all, try with it disabled and check if it works better then, if so then add them to your allow list (setup a party, invite one by one, they should appear on the map, click > allow) and it should work without issue when enabled. No worries!

Ok sweet I will definitely try that. On the topic of the Geo-Filter I noticed that when I load up Call of Duty there is a server in Dublin, Ireland that gets pinged(maybe even other places near there I haven't checked each time) and I always wanted to know what that is for. Also I seen on one of the forums here that in order for the Geo-Filter to properly work in COD you need to change your PC device type to a console. Is that ever getting addressed in a future update?

It's an authentication server required for online play. You don't have to do that but I would recommend it - it does get address but the CoD service can get outdated quickly so I suggest this most of the time so it doesn't cause people an issue again, also means you don't have to add your device and select different games when playing, the console service will cover it all.
