digital_steve
Howdy, I’ve owned the R3 for ages and ended up retiring it due to reliability, particularly with dhcp and also speed issues on pppoe. but… my hit reg in valorant is diabolical. I’d love some help putting the R3 on my network, not as the main router, to see if it assists hit reg. Currently I’m using a Deco X20 mesh network, which doesn’t have a dedicated DMZ, so what do I need to do to have a single PC running through the R3 and connected to the net/games? Do I need to port forward everything? Just some things? Do I still need PPPoE auth on the R3? I’m willing to give the r3 another shot if I can include it as a device on my X20 network. Thanks in advance.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted November 23 Administrators Share Posted November 23 You'd just have to connect the R3 to it and then port forward, that's all you can do in that scenario
digital_steve
Port forward for Valorant, or all ports?
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted November 23 Administrators Share Posted November 23 Port forward ports 1-65535 source & destination, TCP & UDP to the R3, that will act essentially as a DMZ function digital_steve

I just want to make sure. It’s annoying having a router with no dedicated DMZ.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted November 24 Administrators Share Posted November 24 The x20 will function as normal and that should then allow the PC on the R3 to get an Open NAT. QoS will not be very effective because it can't control 99% of your network in this setup, it would be mostly for the Geo-Filter.

I might have to look at a second internet line into the house.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted November 24 Administrators Share Posted November 24 Well not pointless, all other features would work, prioritizing should still work well but it just wouldn't be able to counteract any usage from other devices. A separate line is a good option but then you wouldn't need QoS as much either as you'd presumably just connect your gaming device to it.

I’ll give it a run and see how it goes I guess. this is less about other stuff on the network… more bufferbloat, jitter, etc. I just have really wonky hit reg in any online game. Bufferbloat is caused by your network being saturated which is more prevalent when other devices are being used - if you yourself were just gaming there wouldn't be any bufferbloat. 1 download though for example can saturate your network and cause bufferbloat. Do let us know how you get on

Do let us know how you get on I'll be honest, I've just ordered another fibre line into the house. I'll run that line with the R3 dedicated to it. It's Australia, so it's PPPoE, but hopefully with one device only the speed loss won't matter.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted December 2 Administrators Share Posted December 2 Fair enough, definitely easier to control what is affecting your network that way, let us know how you get on!
