Loss of internet connection

Recommended Posts

I have encountered this error every since the initial purchase of the R3.

Basically what has been happening is that everything is working correctly and after a random amount of time, all my devices (on the network either plugged in Ethernet of Wi-Fi) state that there is no internet connection. I try to connect to the R3 either per ethernet of Wi-Fi and I cannot connect (was trying to collect the logs). Only a power cycle (using the power button) re-established my internet.

Reading thru the forums, I saw multiple suggestions but what ultimately stopped the "lockups or loss of internet " was disabling SmartBOOST.

I have updated to 4.0.23, 4.0.40 and 40.0.41 and all of them present the same issue for me.

I would also like to note that I have factory reset the R3 every time I have upgraded the firmware. I have also waited 10 minutes or so after firmware upgrading the R3 so that things get sorted out per say. Then I reboot the R3 and then start my configuration. My configuration consists of:

  • Disabling IPV6 on LAN & WAN.
  • Disabling DHCP.
  • Change default IP from 192.168.77.1 to 192.168.88.1. Since I have a DNS/DHCP solution using a RaspBerry Pi device, it is all configured for the 88.X network (It was the R1 default).
  • Manually set Download and Upload speeds.
  •  Optimize ping. (Yes it sometime takes multiple tries but I usually don't have too much of an issue doing it).
  • Adding SmartBOOST priorities:  Since I work from home I add Work From Home, VoIP, Email, Video & Streaming, Gaming & Cloud Gaming (in that order).

I lost internet today around 6:30 am PST (This was testing the R3 with 40.0.41 and SmartBOOST enabled).

As a last test I rebooted the R3 to reestablished my internet and left SmartBOOST enabled. The difference that i have not tested is that I removed all priorities. So it is enabled with nothing to prioritize. So far it has not locked up today but I do have to note that with 4.0.41 the reboots are less frequent to where before it would only take a couple of hours (lets say 3 or 4) and after 4.0.41 it lasted 20 hours without a lockup.

I'm not sure if anyone else has experienced this issue or perhaps some might have a suggestion also.

P.S. I almost forgot to mention. I also have tested using the older firmware versions .23, .40 disabling/enabling Spanning Tree Protocol, Port Scan Protection, Syn Flood Protection (all located in Advanced settings under Troubleshooting) but this three settings did not have any affect with the lockup.

Thanks for any help.

Hi,

Same problem, the new update 41 changed nothing for me...

Just curious, have you tried disabling SmartBOOST to see if that stops the lockups also?

I'm currently testing it with different settings on Enabled but when I do disable the SmartBOOST, I have had the R3 go for almost 1 week without any issue.

It may be quite hard for us to diagnose this without the logs, has it still been fine with SmartBOOST disabled?

What is the model of the modem/router the R3 is connected to and how have you set that to ensure all traffic flows to the R3? E.g. R3 in its DMZ, modem/bridge mode

This issue has been happening for me too, while playing cod i would notice that stable ping would stop working because i noticed my ping would go back to 15 instead of 20+ and when i try to log into router using 192.168.77.1 it will not let me. The internet still works but the router features are all disabled I have to keep restarting router just to get it to work again. I have a Bell modem/router homehub4000 and have the R3 set to advanced dmz, hopefully this gets fixed soon i have to restart the router everyday just to get it to work.

So yesterday morning I went ahead and rebooted the system and left SmartBOOST on. The only difference I did this time is that I did not set any priorities in SmartBOOST.

It has been up and running for over 24 hours.

So in essence the system does not lockup as long and I either disable SmartBOOST or I have SmartBOOST enabled but with no priorities. Not sure this will help.

As far as my modem, I am not able to see the model because Frontier has it in a locked box. I do know that it is a fiber connection and a direct ethernet connection to the R3. No need for DMZ or anything. It get a direct IP address.

If you try to login using the app when that happens does it work at all? We will definitely look into it.

Just an update for anyone that is also having the issue.

I left SmartBOOST enabled but i removed anything it had in the favorite priorities.

It has not had any issues in over 72 hours.

At least with it enabled you can have your ping optimized (Congestion Control). My Bufferboalt tests come out at A+
