R3 Forum Suggestions

Just a couple of suggestions for the hard working Netduma staff and to all of the valuable contributors to the forum.

For Staff:

  • Does it make sense to update the Netduma FAQ post pinned to the top with answers to the most populated questions?
  • Like we have had before maybe a pinned post with latest update projection dates that people can check rather than raise yet another post.
  • A pinned post with latest beta download link with instructions to install and revert. With warning too that it may not have been tested thoroughly.
  • Closing out posts that have been answered or move them to the bottom of the forum.
  • Links to brief videos on how to troubleshoot known current issues on Geofilter for an example, explain what each of the options do and when they should be set.

For Contributors:

  • Take a few moments to skim through previous posts to see if your issue has already been raised.
  • Prefix your post with the area of the firmware you have an issue with e.g. Geofilter / Port Forwarding. Then a clear high level description of the issue in that area.
  • Give feedback on a post if you have had similar issues, especially if through trial and error you have been able to solve or get around the issue.
  • Be patient and considerate when waiting for replies.

The advantages to the above suggestions are that Fraser and the staff can spend less time answering the same questions and more of their precious time getting the updates sorted for the community. I would hate to guess how much time is wasted on forum posts due to post spamming.

Also we can get answers from the community, rather than just the Netduma staff and be able to navigate the forums a lot more efficiently.

I have been really impressed with the R3 and I took it on knowing their might be a few teething problems. I am very confident however that the issues will be fixed soon due to the dedication the Netduma guys have demonstrated to making this a success. Thanks to all who work long hours, over the holiday period too. Not many companies I know of do that.

Thanks for the post/suggestions, to cover your points:

  1. The most popular questions at the moment are related to issues that need to be fixed really so they won't be a FAQ for long.
  2. We learnt from the R1 that giving estimated dates for updates was a very very bad idea. Not to mention it's so fast paced that estimations can change daily.
  3. We generally have done that in the past so will probably do that in the future. That was a necessity but now you can update the firmware on the router itself it may not be as needed, it will also provide you the change log.
  4. I can't move them to the bottom of the forum but I could close them, the thing is though some people will have fixed their issue and the next day they're back again so it does help to have that post open so I know what has been tried/tested before.
  5. I'm not sure we'd make videos for issues but there will be more feature based videos coming

It would be super helpful if people did that when making a topic, it doesn't slow any devs down, generally it's just me responding, it would help me for sure. However, in my experience, if someone is having an issue they just want to get a topic up and start getting some responses as fast as possible, this does change person to person though.
