l2eactionz
Okay so been thrown a life line it seems. I switched to plusnet fttp 300mb down 50mb upload. when me and partner moved in together saving some pennies but I feel like for gaming it's been a nightmare. I was previously with sky and had no issues on a standard fttc line 20mb down 5mb up. I've done some research and all/most use pppoe now meaning max mtu of 1492 which shouldn't be an issue (as research suggests mtu really has minimal impact) but apparently can be when gaming is involved sometimes putting strain on a routers cpu? Not 100% sold on this BUT. The ability sky and talktalk have to use dhcp "running there own backhual" Talktalk also offer amazon eero 6 routers now which doesn't support pppoe so they know something we don't maybe. Anyway to cut to the chase did sky work better for me back in the day because they run there own stuff and the ability to get max mtu 1500 constantly vs pppoe means I was actually getting better gaming performance. Or plusnets network is super over congested due to the low price broadband they offer. Would it be better to go with sky due to my previous experience being good or talk talk on the hopes that they have less customers and less congestion thoughts and opinions people go!!! DARKNESS
@l2eactionz I would firstly figure out if it an ISP/line issue by using a tool called ping plotter or using an alternative that diagnoses the network https://www.pingplotter.com/ As for MTU if you believe it maybe causing issues here short vid on how to find the optimal mtu https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2rOWgGuHBo Set up qos properly it not going to be the exact same from your original qos you have to set it manually and find what gives you the least buffer

Funny enough the video is almost laughable as once you change the mtu on your router your findings would also be effected? My mtu is 1492 on router and 1492 is my best when testing you obviously take away the header so it's like 1464 or something along those lines before fragmented packets. But let's say I change my mtu on router then my "best max mtu changes" it doesn't quite make sense you know?
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted September 4, 2023 Administrators Share Posted September 4, 2023 It's very hard to say why, one thing I can say for certain is that the myth of getting high speeds equates to a better gaming experience is false. It's all about your ping and the stability of that ping, have you compared to see if the new connection has a higher/more unstable ping?
DARKNESS
@l2eactionz As for the first question your findings will be shown of whether maxing your mtu is the cause of your affect or not that the reason you need to max out the mtu in the settings in order for you to see all different size packets fragments etc That depend whether your ISP is using dhcp or ppoe you've stated before you were using DHCP so you don't need to subtract 28-8 you actually add 28 to whatever you found to be your mtu optimal in the router As for PPOE it a bit different I am not technical using the ppoe so your going to have to search the differences and there are certain mtu depending in your area that can go higher than 1500 though that is extremely rare I used this for my guide it may differ but I think it explain it better than I would https://www.dwthacker.com/finding-and-setting-mtu-on-mac

I know cod has a ridiculous amount of sbmm style things happening in the back ground. But plusnet during peak times is purely horrendous I'd be interested to try a ping tool but never messed with one or understand how. Whiles I'm here I may aswell ask you is there any way to revert back to old firmware .56 from being in the newest beta firmware?

This guide should help you: https://support.netduma.com/en/support/solutions/articles/16000074717-how-to-test-your-internet-ping Yes you can download the firmware from the Netgear site then downgrade the same way you would manually downgrade from Settings > Administration > Firmware Update
