skooterxsavage
Hey Everyone, I have a Comcast modem with a netgear n600 router hooked up right now. I have to run my Xbox wireless because my set up is in the basement right below the router in the living room. I'd like to know which option works best for me. 1. Plug netduma into n600 router and run it wireless to xbox. 2. Plug netduma into Comcast modem as a 2nd WiFi connection and connect Xbox wireless 3. Use a range booster or access point in basement with set up and connect netduma into the access point and hardwire everything. Will this work? I'd like to do this for a stronger connection but I just overall need to know which is my better option. I will eventually have things hardwired but it won't be until I move in a few months and I want to try to fix my connection issues now. Thanks. iAmMoDBoX
Depends on what features you want to use. By not having the R1 as your primary router you lose the functions of congestion control and such. The only thing you can use is the geo filter. What I would do is run Modem>R1>powerline adapter>xbox and connect your Netgear in AP mode if you really want to use it. Depends on what netgear it is, the R1 may have good enough wifi for you. The even better option is to simply run an ethernet cable from the basement to the living room. Usually basements aren't finished off so you can run cables pretty easily. Move your modem and R1 to the basement with you, then run an ethernet upstairs with the Netgear in AP mode for the rest of the house to use. That's the setup I run at the moment. skooterxsavage
So what you're saying is to use the netduma as a primary (connected directly into the modem) and use my range extender in the basement to make the signal better and hardwire the xbox to the range extender? I can't drill a hole in the floor to run a wire to the basement or else I would. It'll currently renting.
PharmDawgg
Yeah that wouldn't be a good idea if you are renting. But yes this would be best -- 'So what you're saying is to use the netduma as a primary (connected directly into the modem) and use my range extender in the basement to make the signal better and hardwire the xbox to the range extender?'. Well obviously I'm sure you know gaming over wifi is not good so if you can avoid it then try to. For a solution to that, you could try using a powerline adapter. That is what I would recommend doing. Go modem>R1>Powerline adapter>Xbox and let all your other devices use the R1 as their new router. If needed plug the Netgear router into the R1 and set it to access point mode to use the wifi on it and disable the R1's wifi.
skooterxsavage
Is the PowerLine adapter the same thing as a range extender?
skooterxsavage
Oh I see what it is. I plug an ethernet cable from the Netduma into the power line adapter then I plug it into the wall. Then at the wall outlet in the basement I plug another PowerLine adapter into that and run an ethernet cable from that into my Xbox and wahlah. It's like I'm the running wired? Generally you'll have the wired advantages of lower ping than wireless... But with reduced speed which doesn't really matter as long as it's stable.
