XR500 - IPv6 bypassing anti bufferbloat settings

Recommended Posts

So after doing some tests on PFSense vs XR500 / DumaOS anti bufferbloat I had a bunch of issues where the XR500 didn't regulate speed down to the set level.

XR500

Latest firmware .130

PPPoE connection - No VLAN tagging

I tried Speedtest.net, speedtest.corecasys.com and waveform bufferbloat, captured traffic by wireshark and all these seem to use IPv6 as medium over IPv4.

As soon as I disable IPv6 on my networkadapter it defaults to IPv4 and everything works as it should. And enable IPv6 again, restart browser and it's back to not working.

This is a huge issue since IPv6 is becoming more common and common. But also, Youtube, Netflix and a bunch of other streaming services are already using Ipv6 by default, and IPv4 as backup. So when a user on a low bandwidth connection is experiencing ping spikes while buffering video's and can't figure out why, it may be that IPv6 is enabled on their system and that is the cause of it.

This is something that should be looked at IMHO as running IPv4 only will not bother most people at this point but more and more systems are adopting IPv6.
