SendNukes Posted September 25, 2020 Posted September 25, 2020 I'm not entirely sure how vpn work but I've read that in some scenarios, it can reduce packet loss, ping etc. Is this true? And would the geo filter make a vpn almost redundant?

If you have particularly bad routing to a game server i.e. you have a high ping to begin with then using a VPN can but not always help in that instance to provide a more efficient path to the server. If you have something like 30ms ping on average for example it is unlikely to help you.
SendNukes Posted September 25, 2020 Author Posted September 25, 2020 0k so I got the configuration file for the sever and inputted username and password as well. Is it suppose to look like this on the left? And why is it not letting me add my xbox on the right?
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted September 25, 2020 Administrators Posted September 25, 2020 Yes that is absolutely right. You have added it, because you can't differentiate the services on the console it has greyed it out so it just applies to the console as a whole.
SendNukes Posted September 26, 2020 Author Posted September 26, 2020 It's still routing me through my service provider on all devices
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted September 26, 2020 Administrators Posted September 26, 2020 How are you testing that on the consoles?
SendNukes Posted September 27, 2020 Author Posted September 27, 2020 I got it to work. The only issue is that now that im on vpn, it starts matchmaking at <113 ms ping. My ping assist is set at 45. I let it put me in a game just to see if it was just an error, but ping was extremely high and I started having much bigger connection issues
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted September 27, 2020 Administrators Posted September 27, 2020 As I mentioned, in most cases it raises your latency. If you select the closest VPN server to you then this can help but you're still adding extra hops to the game server.
SendNukes Posted September 27, 2020 Author Posted September 27, 2020 I started trying a different vpn provider and it was going ok. But I had no idda it actually restricted my speeds that badly. I'm on a gigabit plan and it had me slowed down to 5mbps / 900kbps on my ps4. I'm done with the vpns lol
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted September 27, 2020 Administrators Posted September 27, 2020 Yeah, unless you have a very specific need for it, such as you need to protect your IP then it is not worth it to try and game on.
SendNukes Posted September 27, 2020 Author Posted September 27, 2020 I guess my theory was to try to alter the route of my bandwidth. Certain hops give me issues that aren't related to my provider
