XR700 Issues with dropped internet & router page not connecting

Recommended Posts

Looking for some help as I just got the xr700 router upgrading from my r7000 yesterday and I'm having some issues. First thing I did was upgrade it to the latest firmware XR700-V1.0.1.20 and did the reset right after as I read that's the common requested step afterward. I got a bunch of my devices hooked to it and this morning when I checked the WiFi devices seemed fine but when turning on my PC and laptop they had no internet. I attempted to go to the router and the page wouldn't load so I checked the nighthawk app on my phone and I could see the device online from their but was unable to access it on my PC still. I proceeded to reboot it on my phone app and could then reach it via my wired PC and wired laptop. Doing nothing essentially it was fine but as soon as I would go to do any work I would loose connectivity. this happened several times over the course of use this morning and I tried using the physical button on the router along with the app the reset it at different times.

I started reading around on the forums and found this entry listed below which is kind of similar to my situation but the user seems to be doing things a bit different  the last response was to try to update to the beta firmware which I downloaded but when trying to upload it the page flakes out and goes to a page cant be found. I didn't try to the cmd commands listed yet as I didn't have time this morning had to get to work. For the time being I switched back to my r7000 to stabilize my connection and will work on this further during non work hours. I also noticed in the top right of the dashboard it says I have a new firmware update that needs to be installed but its the same as I have and when trying to push that it basically said it couldn't apply and flipped the router page out where I needed to log back in.

I see a lot of the next inquiries are usually about setup I'm on Comcast for ISP I own my own modem a Surfboard SB6120 plugged directly to the router, from the router I branch out to a Cisco SG 200-08 smart switch with 3 PC's and a laptop on it and a dumb switch in my entertainment center with my game consoles on it. on WiFi I have phones, tablets, a google home speakers screens and chromecasts along with a nest door cam and thermostat oh and 1 laptop. Any help as to why my connection keeps dropping is appreciated in advance and when i get off of work I will try and reset the router again and see if I can get it stable maybe test that beta firmware if not. I will be glad to supply logs if needed as well.

Hey, welcome to the forum!

Sorry to hear you're having this issue. I would definitely recommend you upgrade to the .24 firmware. If you can't access it using the usual interface then try doing so from here: http://routerlogin.net/adv_index.htm do a factory reset after you've managed to do this to prevent any legacy issues carrying over. If you still have WiFi issues could you go to System Information please and see if there are any entries in the log that seem to line up with the issues and post it here.

Update from working on it tonight I did a few factory resets trying to make sure all configs were cleared out and then set it up and uploaded the .24 firmware as you recommended. After the firmware update I reset it a few times to make sure everything is clear for sure and went through the setup I started at about 10PM. All was smooth through the setup and I got a few IPs on devices the way I like them and was adding some reservations all was still well. I turn on my Xbox to check the IP and ad a reservation for it hit apply and then my network drops on my main PC where I'm making the changes, i check my work laptop (both are wired) same thing I check my phone with the Nighthawk app on wireless it sees the router and says its online. So just to make sure I turn data off my phone and I'm stickily on the WiFi can get to google and surf the web fine. I can ping my switch and everything behind it from my PC but I cant ping the router at all. Went on the phone and in the app told the device to reboot now I have network back. This is similar to what it was doing when I first opened it any thoughts on this?

After writing all of that I went to the log to check and for whatever reason the NTP was way off it thought it was Jan 22 for some reason but the latest entry after the reboot seems to be showing the correct date weird as I am just using the default settings for NTP although i usually point to time.google.com for it. I will check everything again in the morning I haven't even got to a point of configuring or testing the geofencing, qos, or port forwarding/triggering that I want to use. If you would like me to send you the logs let me know the best and discreet way to do so.

Just to clarify, where did you make that reserved IP? When you apply a reserved IP it does warn you on the interface that devices will disconnect while getting the new IP, so it might be that if you had waited a bit longer it would have come back, does that fit what happened?

Small update so far today no issues with dropped anything and I got 4 computers going over wire and WiFi so far so good with the beta update. To answer your question it could be the case but that was roughly 30 minutes after where I have made the reservations which i set static IPs on the PCs before doing as well as the Cisco switch. If it happens again within the next few days I will update the post with information on what happened and how. Where I am setting the reservations at Settings>LAN Setup>Address Reservations. Thanks for your help and questions back so far on this.

That's promising, fingers crossed it will continue. Yeah that is way too long. If you're going to do reservations make sure you do them on the router rather than the devices or the switch. For ease as well use their existing IPs otherwise you will need to reboot the devices for them to get the new IP. Keep us posted!

Well it looks to be solid now, haven't had any issues out of it all day or night. Looks like the beta update did the trick, Hopefully we can see this new 3.0 release here soon and get some full roll-out fixes more often that seems to be the most common complaint i have seen on here.

Got some more issues today not sure what to do about them I was getting some more devices setup on my network and I was having some trouble when going to check on some of them. I rebooted the modem and the router a few times its still the same result. I am getting a paused symbol on some of the R-Apps and the ones I need to look at are them like QOS and Network Attached Devices. Any ideas on what to do?

I figured it out at least the getting back to all the pages on the router not so much yet why the pauses are displayed on the installed R-Apps. This article below explained the fix on the last page I had to reboot after all Nintendo devices were off I have a switch and a Wii U. I went ahead and tried to label them the Wii U didn't have a Device type in Device Manager so I set it to Wii the switch was labeled properly. I will test so more with it tomorrow seeing how its very late. Any ideas on why it bugged it out so bad? I assume this will be fixed in 3.0 as well?

Ah it's the Wii that's causing the problem. It's fixed in 3.0. Could you try this workaround for the short term please:

  1. Factory reset your router
  2. Then connect all your Nintendo devices to the router (if you haven't already).
  3. Then go to the Device Manager. On there, click on the Nintendo device and in the side panel that opens, change the device type to an Xbox. Changing to an Xbox will not reduce the performance of that device - it will be prioritised like all other gaming devices.

If you do this reasonably quickly after the reset it should all run fine after that.

And just to repeat, new version has this completely fixed.
