Breebz
I have an XR500 using HideMyAss vpn. This has been working great until Friday. I only have my 2 PS4's in the HybridVpn. I can enable and connect to the VPN no problem. However when I try to login to a game on PS4 I can not connect. This is the first time I have had this issue. I have tried both wireless and wired connections and get the same problem. If I turn off the VPN I am able to login and play games no problem. I am running the latest firmware on PS4 and XR500. Please help me resolve this. Thanks
Breebz
After trying numerous things to fix this issue the only way I have found to resolve it is to remove the PS4 from HybridVpn devices. Load into game and enable VPN the add the PS4 back to the HybridVPN devices. Log out of game and then it will let me log in the game. I shouldnt have to do all of these steps to use the HybridVPN function. Also I have power cycled the router with the 30-30-30 method and this does not help. Any suggestion on how to get this to work correctly?
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted April 21, 2020 Administrators Share Posted April 21, 2020 Hey, welcome to the forum! What game does this happen on and does it occur on all games you try to play? Are you using the Geo-Filter at the same time?
Breebz
Thanks for the response. No I do not have the Geo-filter enabled. It is occurring on every game. I did a speed test on my PC while having the VPN active through HMA desktop app and my speeds were ok. When I added my PC to the Hybrid VPN devices on the router and ran a speed test they were terrible. And no I did not have the desktop vpn open as well as the router vpn active at the same time. I really need to get this figured out since it is the main reason I purchased the router was to use the Hybrid VPN feature.

Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted April 21, 2020 Administrators Share Posted April 21, 2020 Did you do that test on a PC? Also I can't tell what the ping is at all.
Breebz
Yes I tested that on PC through the Hybrid VPN. The ping was over 100 ms. If I use VPN through the desktop app I was getting 56 Mbps down & 18 Mbps upload. So there is something with the HybridVPN on the router that is slowing down the speeds substantially. I am logged in correctly to my VPN account and get a connected confirmation on the screen. I am using TCP. I have tried UDP and was getting the same slow connection
Administrators Netduma Alex Posted April 22, 2020 Administrators Share Posted April 22, 2020 Due to the technology that Hybrid-VPN uses, we'd expect it to go a little slower than the desktop app, as the desktop app is customised for that specific VPN service. Hybrid-VPN is more generic, it uses the OpenVPN protocol. The ping does seem very high, are you using the same server on both the desktop version and hybrid VPN? Are you getting a reasonable ping on the desktop version?
Breebz
I am using the same server on HybridVPN and Desktop app. Yes I am getting a reasonable ping on the desktop version. The HybridVPN should not slow my connection from 56 mbps to 1 mbps. That is completely unusable. The HybridVpn is the main reason I purchased this router so I could select which devices I wanted to add to my VPN and not have to put my entire network on the VPN if I wanted to enable it. I have friends that use OpenVPN protocol on their routers and are not getting abysmal speeds that I am getting. There has got to be some fix for this or I am going to have to return the router because it is unusable in its current state
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted April 22, 2020 Administrators Share Posted April 22, 2020 In relation to you, how far away is the server that you are connecting to? As that will impact both the speed and ping you're able to get through the router. It's also possible that the HMA servers have been banned by the games, have you tried with another VPN provider to see if it works through their servers?
Breebz
The nearest server I am connecting to is 300 miles away. I have not tried another VPN provider. I purchased the HMA VPN service because that is what is pre-configured in the Hybrid VPN. I have also tried different servers in the US as well as Cuba, London and other areas and get the same result using the Hybrid VPN feature. I dont want to purchase another VPN as I have already paid for HMA
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted April 22, 2020 Administrators Share Posted April 22, 2020 If you don't use the preconfigured files and instead download them and add using the advanced section and choose the closest server to you do you see a difference?
Breebz
I will try and see if that helps. That defeats the entire purpose of the easy hybrid vpn feature which is why i purchased this router.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted April 22, 2020 Administrators Share Posted April 22, 2020 I'm just trying to diagnose what the issue is at the moment, won't necessarily be what you have to use.
Breebz
I did the advanced setup and got the same result. Super slow speeds. This only happens when the VPN is activated through the router not when using desktop client
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted April 22, 2020 Administrators Share Posted April 22, 2020 How are you connecting to the VPN? - Are you using TCP or UDP? It shouldn't in theory make a difference but if you're not already then use TCP. Could you also provide the config you're using and I'll see if there is a way to speed it up. Breebz
I went in to Hybrid VPN on advanced settings. Entered my HMA username and password and then copied the text you sent. It doesn't work. I dont understand what happened. I was having no problem using the VPN until Easter Sunday and then I started getting the slow connection and could not access any games. I'm not banned or anything because everything works fine if if I dont use the VPN. This was prior to the PS4 firmware update so it wasnt that. I also did not change any of my settings from the initial setup with my router. It just stopped working on PS4 but works fine on PC
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted April 23, 2020 Administrators Share Posted April 23, 2020 I'll have to check with the team and see whether there have been changes to the config files we have/need to get but other than that the only reason I can think of is due to people at home during COVID-19 causing more stress on the servers. Breebz
That is not true. I have a friend that has a Netduma router and he is using his VPN no problem while gaming on the PS4. This is definitely something wrong with the HybridVpn feature on the router. I guess I will be returning this for an Asus since those routers actually work
Breebz
So I found out you guys have know about the slow VPN connection through your Netduma software since 2015 and you still havent fixed it? This is terrible customer service. How can you guys advertise features knowing they are faulty? Here's the link for anyone that wants to read how long they have known about this issue? And you guys are asking me all of these questions knowing this has been going on for years.
