Portforwarding for Minecraft Server

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I've been trying to make a Minecraft server and port forwarding port 25565. I am unsure as to why my port remains closed even though I believe I've setup the port correctly below:

I've used the Port Forwarding Tester from https://www.yougetsignal.com and it lets me know that the port is still closed.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hey, welcome to the forum!

First of all how do you have your XR500 connected to the ISP hub? Is it in the DMZ or is the hub in bridge or modem mode? If you don't provide a clear path to the WAN for the XR500 then that port will not be opened.

Thanks for the welcome! Unfortunately, I'm not 100% sure how to answer your question. As far as I know my internet setup if very simple consisting of one modem and the XR500 router. Is t here a way to check my modem to answer your question properly?

If the modem is just a pure modem then you shouldn't be having any problems. One thing you can do to test, is to put one of your devices into DMZ on the XR500, then you can do the same port test as before. Depending on the results, we can narrow down where the problem lies.

On the modem in question, if it's not just a pure modem, we might need to change some settings on there... One question, what kind of WAN IP are you getting on the System Information page? I don't want you to reveal your public IP, but does the IP address on that page start with 192.168? If so, the upstream modem has a DHCP pool, and that might explain what's happening here.

So here's what I did. I took my desktop's ip address and put it as the default DMZ server in the 'WAN Setup" section of the router (Picture below. some items are blacked out for privacy):

When I go to the system information page, I see that my WAN IP does start with 192.168.

Even after putting in my desktop's IP in the default DMZ server, it is still saying the port is closed (I tested it with my game running and listening on port 25565)

Just FYI no need to black out that IP address as it is a local IP - if anyone tried to attack that then they would be attacking themselves.

The fact that System Information is showing a WAN IP starting with 192.168 indicates that you don't have a pure modem. Does your modem provide WiFi? Could you look on the sticker on it and let us know the model please?

Ah gotcha. So I took a closer look at our internet routing system. We have a Netgear CM500 modem that is connected to a Vonage switch (?). That switch is then going to our router.

I'm assuming the Switch is managed which is why it is handing out a local IP to the router. Do modem > XR > switch which is better anyway so all devices can be controlled by the XR. Then see if it shows open after that.

Hello. Just to provide some closure on this. Turns out I misspoke. It wasn't a switch. It was another router. So my set up was Modem > VOIP Router > Wireless Router (functioning as a router rather than AP mode). I switched it up to your recommendation of Modem > XR (in router mode) > VOIP Router and it works!
