XR500 WAN IP 0.0.0.0 [Issue]

Recommended Posts

[Whining]
Hi, I'd just like to say I'm a little bit disillusioned by a number of things that have happened since I've purchased this router. I've never had so many problems that couldn't be fixed because of the proprietary software installed on this router. From the roll backs in firmware versions to fix not being able to access my default gateway to having to scour the forums to find out that I have to assign a static IP to get my internet to work, this has been a roller coaster of regret. That being said and out of the way, I'd still like to try and fix whatever this new problem is.

[Problem I'd like help with]
As of right now, my XR500 has an issue with obtaining a WAN IP. What happens is as follows:

  1. I boot up my modem and wait until its fully initialized
  2. I turn on my XR500 and wait for awhile
    1. Now sometimes the DHCP will administer an IP address to me and sometimes it will not here. As of recently it consistently does NOT give me an IP automatically
  3. I will check the default router's web page and see that my wan IP is listed as 0.0.0.0
  4. So now I assign a static IP and the internet will work for a little while
  5. The internet after 24 hours or less ALWAYS disconnects
  6. So I restart my modem and restart my router, nothing happens still no internet
  7. I now switch from a static IP back to Dynamically receiving an IP from the ISP
  8. Now I have internet again
  9. From step 4 to 8 rinse and repeat.

What may be causing this? My roommate suspects that its because our ISP has us on a "dynamic IP" addressing scheme or something of the sort so our IP is always changing. Any help would be appreciated. I would like to note that I've already RMA'd one of these routers and the issue has persisted on a brand new router. I thought maybe I'd setup the configuration wrong but that does not appear to be the case.

As always, thank you for your time.

You need to leave your modem on all the time, I cannot understand why you turn it off. You also need to leave the router to get an ip address (dynamic). Static ip's do not come as standard with isp's for free. Static ip's however can be applied on the lan side of your network. Constantly turning off and on your router and modem will affect your connection performance.

Welcome to the forum!

Is your modem just a modem, or a modem/router combo? If it's a combo:

  • Check that DHCP is enabled on the modem side.
  • Setting a static WAN ip from your XR500 shouldn't be necessary. If it was possible to reserve an IP on the modem side I would do that instead of setting it from the router side. Ideally though, it should all be automatic.

If it's not a combo, then you're supposed to be seeing your external IP address listed as the WAN IP of the XR500. You can see the current WAN IP in the System Information page.

Most ISPs don't let you set a static IP unless you pay extra. It's best to set this to automatic and let the router sort it out. Your roommate might be right, it sounds like the IP might be changing and kicking you off. I'm actually not sure how most ISPs deal with this.... Which ISP are you using? This might require a little research.
