Double NAT and Latency Issues

Recommended Posts

Good Day,

I have recently purchased a XR 500 to correct the latency issues with my gaming for COD: Modern Warfare (2019) on my 1st Gen Xbox One. It have searched online, asked random people on game chats, and called companies (AT&T, NETGEAR, GeakSquad) to help me. No one can help. I met a guy in a party that guided me through how to "port forward". I did what he told me. The NAT type went from Moderate to Open. So that's a good direction. BUT, my latency is still high. I am 50-60ms constantly. I have noticed incredible lag times for a FPS. That is tested in game from the options menu in COD:MW and from the Xbox dashboard. Both seem to match accurately. I have heard of so many terms and abbreviations, but I don't understand what those are and mean. It's as if it's another language to me. I have "port forwarded" as follows:

XBox1 - TCP/UDP: 3074

XBox2 - TCP/UDP: 53

Xbox3 - TCP: 80

Xbox4 - UDP: 500

Xbox5 - UDP: 3544

Xbox6 - UDP: 4500

XBox7 - UDP: 88

Call of Duty TCP/UDP: 28960,20500,20510      (This is a pre-configured Custom Services Setting that was listed under my AT&T router/gateway setup that I figured I need.)

My current issue is a "Double NAT Type" Message after hooking up my xr500 per instructions. My "Detailed Network Statistics" are as follows:

Download Speed - 424.68 Mbps

Upload Speed - 116.82 Mbps

Packet loss - 0%

MTU - 1480

Latency - 47 ms (this has been the lowest I've seen it go, but when in game it only shows 50-60 ms constantly.)

I have 2 Alexas in the house and an apple TV. I have tried unplugging them before I play, but it doesn't help. I turn off all warless devices as well such as my watch and cell phone. so there are no other major devices attached to the wifi. Alexa and apple tv are still connected to AT&T gateway, not the NetGear Router. Xbox, Gateway and NetGear Router are all 2-3 feet of each other with the xbox in between.

I literally need guidance and step by step help. I have done research and tried learning what all these different things mean. Without something effective to apply it to, its hard for me to understand what is what, and why.

I need effective help to properly hook up my AT&T Gateway to the XR 500 over ethernet cable and get an "Open NAT" and a latency of around 12ms. definitely not around 50-60ms. (AT&T specialist said that's what I should be getting. "Get a NetGear xr500". that should fix it. Others swear by it")

I have spent about a month, over 10 hours collectively on the phone, and the cost of my NetGear to try to fix this latency issue. A true solution to this would really help me out. Thank you in advance.

In game ping will always be higher than what DumaOS is telling you. 50-60 ping also isn’t bad. But if you want it the lowest it can possibly be then place your geo filter location where you live and put strict mode on with a small radius. I personally don’t recommend this I like an in game ping of 40-50ms as anything lower or higher is bad experience.

you need to put you XR500 in DMZ in your ISP router, this should get rid of your Nat issue.

Dont worry about port forwarding, upnp will take care of that.

IDK how to get DumaOS to tell me my PING rate. How would I go about getting my GEO Filter location adjusted. You want me to put it at Strict Mode?

If 50-60 is good, why am I still having issues where the other players have so much lag on the kill cams. AKA not being in the location on my screen when im killed vs on kill cam.

Hey, welcome to the forum and Happy Holidays!

First things first I would highly recommend you work your way through these optimal settings guides: http://support.netduma.com/en/support/solutions/folders/16000090646
it will help you get an Open NAT and help you understand how to use the Geo-Filter to view your ping, use QoS to eliminate local congestion etc. For your gateway remove the port forwarding you did with that service, you should either have it in modem mode if possible or use the DMZ as above - the guide will help you with this. If you're using the DMZ disable the WiFi on the gateway as well, then connect ALL devices to the XR500 so you can utilise the QoS features properly.

The console settings ping has no bearing on your game ping, it is simply your ping to the online server required for XBL/PSN etc. What makes you think you should be achieving a 12ms ping to games?

ok. I will check out the link and do my best to follow it. Others online and the AT&T guy said I should with fiberoptic. I have read online I should have under 30 ms for FPS.

Do a wired speedtest.net test when there is nothing using the internet, whatever the ping that it gives you add 10-20ms to that and that will be what you should expect your game ping to fall within. The CoD ping includes things like processing delay etc which all games have but not all choose to show in their calculations. The Geo-Filter ping is the ping direct to the server which is what you can control and so what you should focus on. Once you've gone through the guides you can find out how to see your ping and see what you're working with.

That’s because of lag compensation.

modern warfare has worst servers and sbmm for any call of duty made even net duma cant fix that

forced camp or spawn trap that that if you think your going have some fast run and gun game play think again

even 20ping not going help actually makes it worse for you because you still get people coming on with crappy internet and high pings 100-150 daily
