Does this look right?...sorry for the length

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, instead of making a bunch of posts asking different setting questions, I figured it might be easier to just show you what settings I currently am using and you can tell me if it looks good or what to change.  A little info first though with a few random questions...

Just got the R1 yesterday.  I live in Wisconsin, USA.  Internet speed is 20 down 2 up.  Pretty much just play COD AW on Xbox One...primarily with my brother who lives 30 miles away.  We usually get in a party and play.  And normally the lag or something seems worse when we are in a party vs when we play solo.  Is that typical for everyone else?  Well, hopefully this router will fix that.  We have yet to play together since my R1 came.

Will I need to have him join my party (vs me joining his) in order to benefit from this router?

Am I also correct in seeing that it is normal to just bookmark the router page so I don't have to type those numbers in each time?  And there is no password security so anyone who is on my WiFi network could change my settings by going to that page?

Ok, when I play I change my download and upload cap to roughly 70% and drag my device prioritization to roughly 85% on my Xbox One.  Then when I'm done playing I put the caps back to 100% and reset the distributation.  That sound correct?

I'm using Preemptive.  Share excess on.  Strict Mode On.  Ping assist I set to 30ms...is that too low?

Distance I'll play with more but have been clicking the button 3 times and that give me a 827 mile range.  Seems to work ok there.

I've never done port forwarding.  In the settings I went to UpNp and have that enabled...it came that way.  But in the miscellaneous settings I had to click to enable UpNp forwarding.  I did that...should I have?  I don't know what that is.

Are there any settings that when you change you need to reboot the router for it to take effect?

I think that's it for now.  Thank you in advance to whoever decides to tackle this long post and answer all these questions!  Much appreciated!!!

Hey Fazor, no need to apologise for the length! I'll answer your questions 1 by 1 :)

  1. Yes it would be better if you got him into your party, it may be good to add him to the allow list as well, you can see how to do this here http://wiki.netduma.com/doku.php?id=adding_friends_to_your_allow_list
  2. You can bookmark it yes, and yes thats right, anyone on your network can access the control panel, however we will be implementing a login in the future!
  3. Those settings sound great and should work very well :)
  4. Depending on what your base ping is you may need to change the ping assist, but we usually recommend a minimum of 30, you can of course play around with this and see what works best for you.
  5. We usually recommend a minimum of 1000km but this is by no means set in stone, if that distance works for you then great!
  6. As long as you have open NAT you won't need to enable UPnP forwarding, however if you don't it will help. You can see how to open your NAT here http://wiki.netduma.com/doku.php?id=how_do_i_open_my_nat
  7. No there aren't everything is set straight away, if theres an apply button clicking it will save your setting instantly :)

I hope that helps! Any more questions please do not hesitate to ask, happy gaming! :)

Hi Fazor,  :)

Will I need to have him join my party (vs me joining his) in order to benefit from this router?

Yes, it doesn't work very well at all if you're not the party leader.

Am I also correct in seeing that it is normal to just bookmark the router page so I don't have to type those numbers in each time?  And there is no password security so anyone who is on my WiFi network could change my settings by going to that page?

I have my page booked marked - I think some people have it set as their home page - doing this it fine. You're right, the page isn't password protected although this is on the system to be added http://ticket.netdumasoftware.com/ticket/1

Ok, when I play I change my download and upload cap to roughly 70% and drag my device prioritization to roughly 85% on my Xbox One.  Then when I'm done playing I put the caps back to 100% and reset the distributation.  That sound correct?

Yep, thats sounds right :)

I'm using Preemptive.  Share excess on.  Strict Mode On.  Ping assist I set to 30ms...is that too low?

To answer this one you need to know your base ping. You can find this out by running an internet diagnostics check and then pressing details to see the ping. If you don't know what it means you can post a screen shot instead :)

Distance I'll play with more but have been clicking the button 3 times and that give me a 827 mile range.  Seems to work ok there.

Pressing the snap button two or three times is usually what is recommended so it looks like you've got it set right there :)

I've never done port forwarding.  In the settings I went to UpNp and have that enabled...it came that way.  But in the miscellaneous settings I had to click to enable UpNp forwarding.  I did that...should I have?  I don't know what that is.

Having that enabled won't do any harm. Do you have an Open NAT? If you do you don't need to change anything, if not follow these instructions and they should help you.

Are there any settings that when you change you need to reboot the router for it to take effect?

Nope, no settings require a reboot. Rebooting can actually cause you to lose some settings so it is better to try to avoid rebooting if you can.

Hopefully this has answered your questions - if you have anymore please feel free to post!

Wow, super quick responses guys.  Thanks.  Well most of my questions are answered now except a few.  And a couple more details that you may or may not need to know.  I do have my Xbox wired to the Modem/R1.  Everything else is wireless...my computer (which is where i access the router page when I'm playing), tablet, girlfriend's computer, phone, ps3.  Also, my girlfriend does watch netflix and hulu upstairs on my ps3 often when I'm gaming...so I hope the congestion control will help with that cause I do see that I'm behind and dying faster when she's up there watching shows.  (one main reason that lead me to Netduma!!!)

Ok, so Ping...on my xbox one in the settings the latency is usually at 76m .  Not sure if that's accurate or not or if I should worry about that.

When I do a ping test on pingtest.net it comes up as 18ms.  So what should I set my ping assist at?

I do have an open Nat, so all is good there...I did uncheck the upnp forwarding box in the miscellaneous settings section since it sounded like I didn't need to do that.

Allow vs Deny....I will try to add my brother to the allow list.  Is there a way to undo a person if you put him on the deny list?  I see a couple dots in the red (deny) area and I may have put two in there on accident when I hit the update button not knowing what it does.  Anyway to clear them?

Lastly...for those of you who've had this R1 for a while now...are you still opening the router page and looking at the ping graph and stuff when you play?  Or have you just gone to realize that you have the best possible settings and don't really bother to look much anymore.  I find myself running back and forth from my couch to my computer to look at the ping graph and geofilter stuff almost as much as I'm looking at my television gaming screen!

Thanks again guys, you Rock!  Too bad I still suck at COD AW :)   Looking forward to BO3

Hi Frazor!

Ok, so Ping...on my xbox one in the settings the latency is usually at 76m .  Not sure if that's accurate or not or if I should worry about that.

When I do a ping test on pingtest.net it comes up as 18ms.  So what should I set my ping assist at?

Ping on the Xbox isn't accurate so forget about that. If you have an 18ms base ping then ping assist at 30ms should be fine. You might find it better to increase it a little bit, maybe 35 but that's up to you.

Allow vs Deny....I will try to add my brother to the allow list.  Is there a way to undo a person if you put him on the deny list?  I see a couple dots in the red (deny) area and I may have put two in there on accident when I hit the update button not knowing what it does.  Anyway to clear them?

Yep. Click on the dot in the red area, click reset and then click update again. This should remove the person from the deny list :)

I only usually do it if I'm lagging. If the game is playing ok then I don't bother :)

Hopefully that has answered your questions!

Sounds good...Thanks Crossy.  I think that's everything I have for now.  I'll keep you posted if I have any other issues come up!

Awesome! Yes, please post if you have any issues :) I'll close this thread now - please make a new one for any other problems!
