Access control panel from WAN, Security implications

Recommended Posts

I was wondering what the security implications are of having Netduma R1 and having "Access control panel from WAN" active in this configuration:

ISP Internet -> ASUS router -> Netduma R1

So I have the Netduma R1 connected to the ASUS Router.

Even if I have "Access control panel from WAN" active, all this means is that someone would need to get access to my ASUS router network before they could login to the Netduma R1, right?

They wouldn't be able to access the Netduma R1 unless I did something like forward ports or DMZ via the ASUS router.

Since I've been able to upgrade my Netduma R1 to the latest, I've also enabled "Interface Password Protection", but I just want to make sure my setup is as safe/contained as possible.

Thanks.

Hi, you setup of R1 is correct and welcome to the forum.

May I ask why you have the R1 behind your asus router and not in front of it?

I don't remember, probably experimenting with the Netduma R1 without disrupting the rest of the network.

the optimal setup would be R1......asus router in AP mode if you wish to use the 5ghz wifi of the asus router. It is optimal to have ALL your devices behind the R1 to fully utilize the congestion control feature of the R1.

This is a great recommendation. You ideally want all traffic going through the R1. And given the Asus router has superior WiFi, you can take advantage of that by putting it in AP mode. I recommend you still wire your gaming devices directly into the R1 though.

Let us know if you have any other questions.
