SHANE523
Is there any particular reason there is no option to setup DNS servers in the DHCP settings?
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted March 10, 2018 Administrators Share Posted March 10, 2018 Not sure what you mean, DNS is located in Internet Setup
SHANE523
When a LAN device, PS4 for example, receives an IP address from the router using DHCP it only populates the PS4 DNS to the router IP address. I want my devices to use specific DNS addresses, not the router.

Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted March 12, 2018 Administrators Share Posted March 12, 2018 If you're thinking that this will give you a better gaming experience it will not, but as stated above you can set this on the devices themselves. Though if the DNS doesn't match with the router DNS it may take the router DNS as the one it uses - as it is the last hop before the internet. SHANE523
Yes you can add them to each device but IF you have several devices it is much easier admin to have it populate through DHCP server settings.I have found that I do get a better response by using external DNS on devices. xlr8r
just stick your preferred DNS in the router and forget everything else. on mine, i have set OpenDNS DNS servers as default. With that i can setup (for free!) internet filtering for my kids using teh OpenDNS web portal 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.

Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted July 31, 2018 Administrators Share Posted July 31, 2018 That question is better suited for Netgear, it is their settings page and I assume that it is like that across all their routers so they must have a reason for this. Likely not needed for the majority of their customers. Would recommend calling their support line and asking, they can then request it from their development team. YT_LowPingKing
I think what is being asked for is a way to turn off DNS Relay on the XR500. I would like this option as well. Using DNS Benchmark on the XR500 or the R1 can show that the DNS Relay isn't as fast as it could be. The DNS Relay can drop in ranking being slower than using just DNS. It's also been recommended not use a DNS Relay so an option to turn it off would be very welcomed! https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm Also I started using 1.1.1.1 for all my DNS needs. ( It's Great ) https://1.1.1.1/
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted July 31, 2018 Administrators Share Posted July 31, 2018 Thanks for the clarification, suggest querying Netgear as may be a reason they haven't included this option
Guest Killhippie
No netgear routers have the ability to turn off the DNS relay. Some routers let you turn it off. I believe some TP-link/ D-Link do not I’m not sure about Asus though. If you turn off DNS relay you lose the ability to use access control or some web filtering which is probably why Netgear never implemented it.If you want to get Netgears attention posting about this on the netgear forum would be the best way. I believe some R9000 users are asking for the same thing. Maybe team up with them.https://community.netgear.com/t5/Idea-Exchange-For-Home/Additional-DNS-support/idi-p/1066702/page/3#comments
